Powertrax questions

One of the recent threads brought up the Powertrax no-slip unit for Dana 60s. The consensus was that they are easy to install (at least compared to other limited slips).

What about after the installation? Are these a quality unit? Durable? Safe for the street? Quiet?

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Powertrax questions

I can tell you this much about 'em; my best friend installed one in his '93 Bronco 8.8" diff back in '94. It has over 180,000 miles on it, and the Powertrax still works like it did when installed.

It hasn't been removed, so I could not say anything about how worn it may be, but I think the miles served says a lot.

Powertrax questions

If you have a Dana 60, go to the junk yards and pick up a original Dana PowerLocker... They are the strongest posi units you can get for a dana 60... Ford, GM, dodge have used then in truck rears since the late 50's early 60's...Just to show you have strong they are... Mopar only used the dana powerlocker in the 426 hemi cars of the late 60's early 70's...If you have a late 60's to early 70's ford f250 with the 16 spline axles its the best posi you can get....You can also get them for the 31 and 35 spline axles...

Powertrax questions

Metro2,

Can you give more info on how to find one of these Dana Lockers? I'd love to put one in my dana 60. What vehicles, and what kind of label/tags should we look for? Should this be installed by a Diff guru or is it reasonably simple?

Greg

Powertrax questions

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Dec-01 AT 04:28 AM (EST)]The best way to locate a powerlocker is to see if the original build tag on the rear cover has a L or LS on it...It usually will be after the ratio and will be stamped by itself... The other way is spin one of the wheels and see if the other rotates in the same direction not the opposite direction... If you find a dana 60 that does this you can almost be guaranteed it is a power locker.... If you can get the cover off and see... They are MASSIVE UNITS...They fill the whole differential housing...If you are looking for a early 16 spline unit its best to look at the late 60's and early -70 71 72- fords and dodge 3/4 tons of course...I have seen the 16 spline axles in ford trucks all the way to '75 but they are rare...Just about all of the Camper Specials came with lockers(Here in Colorado, anyway)...They are still pretty plentiful in the older truck junk yards..Most of the late 70's and 80's stuff will be 30 spline and over...You will need a differential shop install it... You have to resetup the ring and pinion and change bearings on the locker, that takes a press and a special tool to remove the old bearings...Setting up a dana rear end is one of the hardest ones to do...So expect to pay in the area of $200+ dollers for labor...Hope this helps...Only take a DANA rear to a shop that works on DANAS! You have to use a DANA case spreader to set the backlash and preload correctly!! If the shop does not use it..Say bye bye to your new bearings...
