302 / 5.0 engine block holes

Building my first engine and am buttoning up the last few things before I put it in my Early Bronco. There are a few holes I'm not sure what they are for.

The first is on the driver's side down near the oil pan. The hole is not tapped and sits in the middle of a half-moon depression in the block casting. What's this for and if I need to plug it, what's the best way?

The second hole is on the passenger's side and is also down near the oil pan but appears to be just drilled in the block, parallel to the ground. I don't think this is tapped either. Again, what is it for, and if I need to plug it, what's the best way?

Thanks!

The first one sounds like it's for the dip stick tube. The second one I'm not too sure. It may be a blind hole. Once you find out if you need 'em or not, just plug 'em with a soft plug. If they are threaded, use a pipe plug (as long as it's pipe thread).

1pump is 100% correct on the dipstick tube. That half moon machined depession/hold is for the dipstick tube.

Not sure on the other hole

I know my original question seems a bit idiotic to most, but the main reason I wondered about the dip stick hole is that my oil pan had the dip stick in the side of it on the old engine. What's the best way to keep the dipstick tube in that hole in the block?

Ford has a plug that is installed if you do not need that tube location. It is like a casting plug, driven in place, not threaded.

If you want to use that location, then a new dipstick tube / dipstick would be in order.
