Unhappy bad gas???

How bad did I mess up my truck's engine???
A friend suggested that I use premium gas ,like 91 oct., for my 36 flattie. I had been using reg. at 87 oct. with no trouble. Anyway, last wknd I went to a car show for 120 mi. RT and used about 10 gals. of the prem. Getting there I started to notice it missing or 'bump-bumping' near the show. Coming home I could really notice it kinda chugging alot and add to that we passed thru some showers which probably drained the battery, orig wires gotta go! So, just for a test I tried to restart it hot, tho somewhat damp, and it was totally dead, not even a click or spark anywhere.
According to some books and manuals I have for back then, gas only went to 80 oct. with 12 deg adv. for the spark. Higher oct. of 91 would jump the adv. to 30 something. There's probably less then 5 gals. in the tank. Can I fill it with reg. and hope for the best, or what? Be gentle with me guys, this hobby's on thin ice. Can't afford too many more set-backs.
Tks for any help!~JH~

Your account seems to describe a bad alternator. As the battery runs down the ignition system whill start choking. Then it's flat and won't start the car again.

Showers won't drain the battery, even if your insulation was really cut up. OK maybe if an area was kept really wet for days it could leak it out but not while driving.

Or the battery just went bad. Electrical system will go wacky without the battery to regulate the power.

Tks for the info. I still have the gen. and most of the front end is orig. wiring, all behind the dash is. So you think the gas was a coinsidence and reg. will still be OK?
Talk to you later.

Yeah. AFIAK the higher octane just allows you to advance the spark more without detonation and only comes into play if you have pretty advanced timing. If the timing is too aggressive for regular gasoline, I'd expect pinging under heavy acceleration. Ain't gonna make it no-start.
