Running board lights

I attempted to change the bulbs in my running boards yesterday and found the problem was water. Everything was all rusty inside. The bulb was intact and there was no water in it. Needless to say, the new bulb made no difference. What do I do from here?

Replace the socket. The water corrodes the contacts. Ford dealers ususlly have these in stock.

Quick question: is the replacement socket from Ford improved or just the same old design as the original? Three of the four running light bulbs on my dad's X aren't working (discovered the water issue a long time ago...should have made a post about it then), and I can't see replacing the sockets just to have the problem happen again.

Or would there be a way to better seal the entire assembly from water leakage?

They are just replacement sockets. The problem is the water. I've had this problem for a while and even posted on this forum looking for solutions to keep the water out. There were no suggestions offered. Maybe this new thread will ferret out some solutions others have used.

solution?

I'm going to try silicone sealant around the top off the running board light and rubberized undercoating spray on the backside around the electrical connection.

Also see my recent post for a long discussion of this.

Maybe dip the whole assembly in clear epoxy just before you're finished... might be better to use LED's if you're doing that (as the whole unit would need to be replaced when the bulbs go in that configuration).
