If your cooling system is working properly, putting in a lower temp stat will decrease the engine operating temp, i.e., your engine will run cooler. If the engine is overheating, however, changing to a lower temp stat will not have any effect -- you'll still overheat.
>to make an engine run cooler do you increase the thermostat
>temp or decrease it?? i should know as many times i've had
>to change them.
There are many reasons for engine over-heating.
To start with> Remove the thermostat and bench test it with a pot of water on a stove and a Candy thermometer.
See if it opens at the temp that is stamped on the bottom part.
It will most lucky say 195*F
You can go as low as 180*F
If the thermostat works at the temp value >
Check the engine/ignition timing.
Then check the water pump and radiator.
Make sure you have coolant/anti-freeze > water combo.
it was overheating, but that was due to a straight water fill and someone had installed the thermostat backwards ( spring towards the hose). i do alot of heavy towing and in town driving and have always preferred a cooler thermostat. put a 160 in just haven't had a chance to try it out and wanted to be sure i went the right way with the temp before i did. thanks for the info.
what would you recomend? i'm in north georgia and the temp here is about 90 f or hotter during the summer months. with the 160 in it runs about halfway on the stock gauge,(i have an aftermarket gauge but havent had the time to install it).
i may have bigger problems than a thermostat. i installed a guage kit and found that my oil pressure is 10 psi at idle and 20 psi at 65mph. i do have freash oil and oil filther in. the truck doesn't smoke or use oil ( as far as i can tell i've only had it a few weeks and have put about 2500 miles on it). i'm hopping it's just the oil pump. anyway i picked up a new one and am giong to install it this weekend, weather premitting.
