I know that they made a "special" thermostat for the 351M/400s. I have been told that they are not made anymore. So, the question is .... what are you guys using for your thermostats?
mmmm, i had a look through my archives for the details on mine but not there. I am in australia so maybe not the same one. I will have a look around on evilbay and see if it pops up, but I can gaurantee that I had my galaxie out in very hot temps a few times (not necessarily stop/start in traffic) with no issues.
HI Craig. Yeah it can get pretty warm down there as well as up here in Canada. I was just wondering because I'm ready to put the final touches to this 400. This build has been a LOOONG hard slide. lol I would do it again though. It would go a lot faster as I now know what to look for and where to get the RIGHT pieces. The second guessing your self and listening to the pros and con of this piece or that piece is time consuming. BUT with listening to the guys and their experience has helped me along the way and I couldn't have done it without ALL their help. THANKS GUYS!!!!
Popa John
It wasn't "special" other than it had a "hat" or "disc" on the engine side that would close off and restrict the bypass cast in the block as the thermostat opened. 351 C / 351m/400 use same one. We still have the conventional design ones with the restrictorhat at Advance ... just sold one a few days ago.
Also, I use the Robert Shaw 333-180 in my 351M, but I've had it for years. I see on FlowKooler's web page that only the 333-195 is now shown???? I suppose it's just as well, the 180 is probably too kool for a long lasting engine? It is all brass and of slightly differing design than conventional, it opens with a short stroke and flows more, but still has the restrictor disc which is an absolute "must have" on these engines. FlowKooler is a distributor. I'll use a 333-195 in my 400. I also have a FlowKooler Disc on my water pump vanes that stops cavitation and spill over as it spins .... it used to come in a kit with the T-stat in the '80s.
