I am thinking about ordering the Edelbrock Perfomer Intake kit for my 390. I would get the one that comes with the Carb, cam, lifters, and intake for $611.99. This is from the catalog on page 62. I couldnt find this kit on jegs.com but i could find the intake on there site. What i am wondering is if this edelbrock stuff is really good. It says Non egr what is that? Oh yea, it doesnt tell you what type of cam/carb or lifters it comes with. It just says "they are all designed to work togethe". Is that true. Any one have this setup? Thanks!
well yea, but im rebuilding it to a 390. Im sorda getting all the parts ready to order so i can do it all at once so i know every thign will work together right
The majority opinion on this board is that the Edelbrock kit isn't very good. It was put together with small cars in mind, and doesn't work very well in heavy vehicles like our trucks. In addition, Edelbrock doesn't really have any expertise in cams, and the cams included with their kits reflect that. They are single pattern cams that are basically knockoffs of some of the better cams.
Edelbrock makes some good parts for the FE, especially their cylinder heads and intake manifolds. Buy those from Edelbrock, but go to a good cam company for your camshaft and lifters. Also, don't pay the ridiculously inflated prices for basic items like timing sets -- Edelbrock just buys them from the same manufacturer as other companies but charges you $20 for the putting it in a package with their name on it.
Also, when you do buy an intake, I wouldn't nevessarily recommend the Edelbrock Performer FE. It's what I have, but I got a really good deal on an open box one that had never been used. They are really just aluminum copies of the factory 390GT manifolds, which can be had for $5-10 at any Ford swap meet. Heck, lots of engine shops will give you one for free just to get rid of it. The Edelbrock aluminum version doesn't flow any better, though it is easier on your back to install.
If you are going to buy a new aluminum intake, go with the Performer RPM. It has larger runners and flows much better than the base Performer FE or any affordable original Ford intake. It costs about $50-75 more than the base Perforer manifold, but it's money well spent.
For cam and lifters, check out Comp Cams, Crane or Crower.
Ok, thanks for the info. All though i know nothing about any swap meets where i live i'll have to think about that. I am just worried about getting the right parts to work together. What i am planning on doing is getting a shop to rebuild my 360 to 390 all stock except and new intake bigger cam and carb. How about the performer intake, with the comp cam 286 and a 600cfm 4bbl carb. Any ideas?
Hey hopefully you'll read this karl. Is this the manifold your talking about that you can get for 5-10 bucks. Whats the wieght of these things compared to alunimum. Thanks
I agree with Karl 100%. I believe the one in the pic is the one but I am not sure. It rises about the same. The aluminum manifold weighs about 26 pounds compared to the S code which weighs about 75+. I could not imagine putting a cast iron intake on by myself but I put my performer rpm on with one hand. The weight savings would be the only advantage of the aluminum. I would say either go performer RPM and build the motor for it or go with the S code. Like Karl said the price per HP is not worth it.
yea, looks like im gunna be getting the performer manifold. I wanna say thanks to you all for helping me!!! Cus i know i have a lot of questions. Ok now what carb and cam would you all prefer. Thanks a lot.
Ditto on what Ratsmoker said. For details on cam selection, check out the FE engine forum and do a search. You'll turn up several dozen threads over the past year where people have debated the merits of various camshafts.
