Well I have killed my IDI again, so there is a 97 F350 crew cab 4x4 dually 8 foot box with a 5 speed and 4.10 limited slip gears with 90,000 miles on it setting across the hill. It also has tube running boards and a visor. The only mod I can see is the muffler is deleted.
It is in good or better condition but not excellent.
A private individual has it for sale so it has not been through the car lot cleaning and polishing, that actually might get it to excellent condition.
I have two questions for you all.
What kind of MPG would you think it would get here in the WV mountains doing a lot of interstate driving at 70 MPH?
What would you offer price wise for that truck?
I know an IDI inside and out, but I am going to be lost with this Stroker engine.

sounds like a find.
with a few easy cheap mods and a chip i would say you could get anywhere from 14-18 mpg.
i get 16 mostly with mine. i have quite a few mods. i also have a 5 speed and 4.10s.
the truck could be worth 10-16 thousand. it just all depends but it sounds real nice. dont hesitate or it could be gone. offer low you never know especially if its a neighbor or a friend.
edit: r u sure its a 4x4? if so the 4 wheel drive was a later install. or the dualls where.

They did make a 4x4 powerstroke in 1997(dually).. It was only avaliable with a flat bed or no bed at all, usually a crewcab, I dont think they were avalible with the xlt pkg.
so actually, The bed was probably added..
I wouldn't expect any better than 13-14 empty pulling the mountains. Maybe 10 average the way you load your rigs out.
Getting decent power is easy and relatively cheap with the PSD. Lots of little mods you can do for a fairly small amount of money....and they're not as difficult to maintain as the mechanical motor crowd would have you believe.
Hi dave i just moved to the powerstroke forum cause im selling my idi, i just recently bought a powerstroke. in my opinion now that i have the powerstroke, it definitely blows our idi's away...Go for it
Jeremy
Id like to see it as well, My x boss has a 97 crewcab, 4x4, psd, 5 spd, He Said he bought new in 98. I dont know if he ordered it special, But it has a flat bed on it... I had the liberty to drive it for almost 2 yrs
i have that same truck, 4:10LS, auto trany, 4 door dually. when i drove it home i went around 83 MPH and got 16 mpg on a 600 mile trip. it was pretty flat also but i had a bit of a cross wind that was kinda a head wind.
if the truck is in ok condition i would say 8ish. i picked mine up for 5400 and id say its in damn good condition with 209K miles. but i really dont know what they go for. i think i got a steal on this truck but call him up see what he wants and then post it. some other guys will know if its a good deal or not.

37.5" frame, it left the factory with the pickup box installed.
I drove by and looked at it again this evening, I could not tell for sure but I think it may have wheel spacers in the rear instead of a dually axle. I measured the back plate to backplate distance, I will know as soon as I measure mine. 57.5" backplate to backplate, I think I remember the dually axle was 61.5". I do remember they are 4" wider than the SRW axle.
Asking price is 15,500 which is high book, I am not going to pay that. Nice truck, low miles but it does have a few dents, looks like hail dents in the hood, and a hole in the bed from the fifth wheel hitch. KBB private seller price is 11,500 which is what I will offer for it.
Plus if it does have wheel spacers that is a big deduct as far as I am concerned. Those are not meant for what I use a truck for, I haul to much weight. I guess they would be OK for when I was towing though, that is what he used the truck for, towing his fiver. Yes, the second mod would be to hit the spring shop, it has 5 leaf main springs and single leaf overloads. I am running 7 leaf mains and 5 leaf overloads on my 250.
I looked at the downpipe on it, it looks like it was run over by the same forklift that ran over the IDI turbo downpipes. So I can see it needs some serious work on the exhaust system to start out for the first mod.
As far as keeping up with my turbo 6.9, it has a long way to go.
Plus 31" tires on a 4.10 axle with a ZF 5 is 4.5 MPH faster than my 33" tires on a 3.55 axle with a T 19 at the same RPM. I am getting 12 MPG with mine running 75 empty, but my truck weighs 8060 pounds. That had me thinking the MPG would be down a good bit. It does blow a lot less black smoke though.
Another question, this truck has 235/85-16 tires which was stock for SRW trucks. Is that what Ford used on the dually rear wheel trucks in 97? The reason I am asking is the rear tires are so close between the duals I would not want to put a load on it the way it sets. I can see a blow out is in my future if I put the kind of loads I haul with my 250 on it.

Stock duallies have 215/85R16's. I tried one set of 235's on mine & had to constantly adjust the air pressure for loads. Ended up changing back to original size when I towed a 5er with 5k pin weight.
I have a 95 dually with 235/85R16's and I have a lot of clearance. I am going to try 255/85r16's next time. I like fatter tires. I am not using spacers, all factory including Fords alluminum wheels. I tow a 15000# 5th wheel and the sidewalls never come close to touching running 80lbs of air pressure. If you buy that truck, change the rearend.
Whew, this list of to do things is getting longer and more expensive.
Starting to think it is to long for a truck that the guy already wants high book for.
Guess it is time to go see how much he will come down on the price.
