Okay folks I painted my truck this weekend with John Deere Blitz Black. (pics in Gallery). Only thing is it has some spots where the paint is really rough feeling when you run your hand across it. And when the sunlight hits it a certain way you can see the spots. Can I wetsand the truck and get it smooth and uniform, it doesn't have to be perfect. What grit do you recommend? Thanks for the help.
3m makes buffing pads with the compound right in the pad it self. It for finished result, velcro back or stick on. They are called 3M Trimact P3000. Use lots of water (so the paint dosen't build up on the pad) and a bit of time. Most eveything else leaves scratched. this can leave a show finish depending on how much time you put in.
I just googled 3m trimact P3000, and it came back did I mean Trizact. I'm sure thats what you meant so I said yea. All it showed was 3000 grit sand paper and some other compounds and stuff to use after that to get those scratches off. And it looked a little high for my shoestring budget. Is that what you were talking about. I'm gonna get some 800 grit and wetsand with that and see what that does. Thanks
trizact is correct. my buddy works as a professional painter. I do custom woodwork and had what sounds to be kinda like the problem you had. I sprayed clear and it ended up rough in the middel,(over spray and/or not enough reducer) I used only the 3000 grit pad and water, worked mint.
Sweet, thanks! I can't wait to see what its gonna look like when I get done. My father-in-law will be at my house today. His brother used to paint cars years ago, so i know I'm gonna hear crap from him about how it looks right now. Before I painted it he kept telling me about how I'm gonna have 50 million runs in the paint. But luckily no runs at all. Just this rough feeling. I hope I can get this sanded out and put some compound on it maybe, if it needs it and it'll look okay. Thanks again.
i would paint a test panel first. i painted mine with blitz black and i would be afraid to sand or buff mine. not positive but not really sure what it would look like. let me know how it turns out, thanks shawn.
I wet sanded it with 1000 grit and it looks and feels so much better now but I did go too deep in some spots (paint was thin) like on a couple of edges and a little on the top of the door by the handle.
UK1050 it still looks fine and flat just like it should, but now I have to go back and touch up those spots were I got too deep. I'm gonna do those spots next weekend then wet sand those spots and then compound! It should turn out great. I'll get some new pics up when I get done.
I have been searching all over the internet to get some design ideas for some old school pinstripes on the hood and tailgate, and I can't decide if I want to go with traditional red rims or lime green??? I like them both wife doesn't like either she says leave them black.
ok if you went too deep in some spots when you repaint these sections you will get "dry or rough" edges around the areas you have just repainted so the best bet is to rerub the truck cover all the areas that you have rubbed through and give it another two wet coats all over, this will bring it up really nice, this may be a lot more work though but the results will be worth it.
So Stonie you don't think I'll be able to blend in the few spots that I messed up? I'm not going for a perfect paint job just a decent one. It does seem like a lot more work to repaint the whole truck when I only have about 6 or 7 spots, the biggest one maybe 3"X5" square on the top half of the door and the rest are just maybe 1" to 2" long spots along the body line where the chrome goes.
you can try although if you have gone through spots already it generally means that there probably was only just enough paint on the truck and in the process of polishing the paint after you have touched it up you may go through again as the paint around where you went through (which is already thin) gets yet another rub and polish, its generally easier to give it a nice rub all over and give it a couple of coats
I repainted the whole truck this weekend and after reading a couple of other posts on Hotrodders I decided I was gonna put it on thick. Man did it turn out good!! I am so happy now It looks exactly like I wanted it too!!! The first time I painted it I thinned it with mineral spirits because I read that using that would help with it not striping because it dries so slowly. But since I was repainting the whole thing again I went and bought some JD thinner. I think that made a difference too but like I said I am so happy with it now. I have some pics tommorrow to post up.
