If you can get an after market that fits good at a reasonable price I would go for it. To fix a bow in a tailgate and dents on the top would require alot of time and you may never get it perfect.Sounds like it has been well used. From my experience after market sometimes dont fit as good as original but on my 88 it is ok with me. If you replace it keep the old tailgate so you can use it for the dirty jobs.
Thanks for info. From your handle I thought we lived in same city.
I bought this from a coworker and the old gate is not available. This is a Lariot, with all trim intact. The bed has tie-downs and the one I found did 2, though it's rough.
I looked at some aftermarket options, and haven't added up the cost yet. Need to write and ask if any hardware comes with it cause if it doesn't I have more work looking and cost.
I am from the Toronto area in Canada.Generally the tailgates do not come with hardware. To change the harware over from the old to new isnt to hard as long as you take your time and there isnt to much rust.Check "LMC Truck" on the net.I have ordered there Ford catalouge and it has all kinds of stuff for the tailgates and small parts. I have ordered many times and have been satisfied. The Lariat trim like the stainless steel piece and the reflector may give you sticker shock. Almost cheaper to buy a wrecked truck for the tailgate. If you scrounge around you may be able to find something that isnt in to bad shape.
Thanks for info. i wish I could buy a wrecked truck to get more parts that I need. i've got two projects now and it would become political real quick both at home and with my neighbors.
I know how you feel. I bought two trucks for $700.00 and my wife was wondering what was going on. The key was to get at them right away, store the parts and get them to the scrap yard. It was a lot of fun but a lot more work than I expected. I had a front end collision 2 months and I was grateful to have all of the spare parts available as the insurance company wanted to write the vehicle off. Took the pay out and fixed it myself.
I've been dreaming the impossible dream... I know it's better than piece at a time... your approach could be workable for me... hmmm.... wife's going on a trip with her mother for a week.... hope i don't run across any good deals... i would very much consider buying then working late nights to rob parts then call a wrecker to get the rest....
I can't move around here without someone tempting with a new alternative...ha.
