Today i put the finishing touches on my engine like radiator hosses and heater hoses. Me and my dad prabley spent a half an hour getting the timing alligned right so it ran good then we shut it off. When i came back about 2 hours later and tried to start it when the startert engaged it made a loud grinding noise. Could this be the starter drive going to heck
i had the same thing happen to mine. it started then it did not disengage. now it just grinds. id just get yourself a new startor, there only 50 bux. thats what im going to do.

well before you buy yourself a new one, get you battery tested and buy a new startor celinoide.
if both of those check out then pull your startor and have it tested somwhere. they will tell you if its good or bad.

The battery isnt dead, When i turn the key the starter engages but it makes a grinding sound that stops when the engine starts up and a release the key.
The starter drive is hanging up and not kicking back into position.
Remove the starter.... grease the drive and shaft, put the juice to it a few times on the bench ....and re-install it.
This is a common problem for engines that sit for a while.
Quote: The battery isn't dead.
FYI, It is best to have a battery fully charged before trouble-shooting,or assuming it is something else.
If it is fully-charged when one comes here to ask questions we know the battery Isn't the problem "right from the start" as batteries cause a lot of problems when they aren't fully charged.
Too many people assume the battery is fine.
I doubt the solenoid (correct spelling) is causing the problem and I hate spending money un-necessarily.
Make sure the battery is fully charged using a battery charger before you do any tests.
Starter drives are known to *Just go bad* without any warning.
Let's see what happens with a fully charged battery first.
Yes i know i cant spell. i was wayyyyyy off on that 1. hahaha
so i have the same prob with my starter. i think i may have ran the truck when it was engaged. do you think i ruined the starter? ill take it off and grease her up and see if that helps.
