What would make my starter grind(sounds like not matching up with flywheel) when i try to crank it.Engine is 1971 240 6 cyl.Original starter with 62,000 miles.
Starter or flexplate. If your flexplate is bad pay attention you get the correct one there are differences. I am assuming you have an automatic. It is possible for a flywell to go bad but not as common.
pull the starter and look at the teeth on both flywheel and starter, more then likely a new stater will fix it but if it dont you can pull the flywheel and heet up the ring gear and tap it off flip it over reheat and tap it back on to give the starter fresh teeth to grab
you can also pull the dust cover thats in front of the bellhousing. i am running an automatic, but the manual ones have a dust cover as well, and you can see inside there and even feel the teeth with your finger. should be 4 bolts.
mine has some funky teeth in some places and if i turn the truck off at the right time the starter will catch those bad teeth and grind.
With 62000m on the truck, that starter has cranked a lot of times. used to pay about $40 for a rebuild, but have since hung a J*gs ministarter on it. More clearance from the headers, and I like the sound they make when cranking. As Tim Allen used to say, "mo' power".

Wizzard, i did as you suggested and found that the teeth on the flywheel are pretty bad.I will try to locate a flywheel for it,but if not i will try what you suggested.
i wouldnt spend no $$ on a flywheel just flip the gear over.
Do you feel this something i can do myself? What is the difficulty factor as far as removing and re-installing gear on flywheel?
What flywheels will work with my application(6cyl.and V8)
Take your flywheel to an auto machine shop and they can install the new gear for you. Only a 6cyl flywheel will work if you replace it, but for what the junkyard will want for a used flywheel(and used gear) is more than the machine shop will charge for the new gear installed.
If you have a torch you can do it yourself. Knock the old gear off with a punch. Lay the new gear on the flywheel and heat around the gear evenly until it expands enough to almost drop in place. Seat it with the punch and hammer.
set the flywheel on a piece of a 2x4 heat the gear with a torch not red hot just good and warm,go around and just tap it off with a hammer. grab the gear with a plires and flip it over on the flywheel and heat it back up and tap it back on. just make shure you tap it all the way on. it wont just fall off or fall back on it needs a few good love taps from a hammer but its a piece of cake to do. this can be done in about 15 min and will cost you nothing in parts just a lil gas and o2 from your torch
