I have a 2000 Expedition that I believe needs a new starter. At first I thought it was the automatic starter, because every time I tried to use it it failed, and then when I tried to start the truck manually I heard what I believe was the starter grinding. Eventually it would start, but I thought the auto starter was causing a problem. I disconnected the automatic starter, and now I'm having the same problem of turning the key, hearing what I believe is the starter grinding for a second, and then a whirring sound. After a few attempts the car finally starts.
So first question is does this in fact sound like a starter issue, or might there be something else at fault. I've had starter problems in the past, and this seems consistent with the sounds and symptoms, but with newer vehicles I feel compelled to ask.
Second question is how difficult is it to swap the starter in a 2000. I read a post about a 1997 that indicated the top two bolts are hard to get at, and it's a two hour job. I've changed starters in the past in twenty minutes. Is there something more complicated about this starter? Can it be changed with a standard socket set?
Probably a broken tooth on the starter. You could remove it to inspect. If removal is anything like my Mustang yes it is a pain. Took me an extra 2 hours fooling with the starter to get my tranny out for my clutch swap on the Stang. If the Expy is close to the same...then you can reach the starter bolts from the front of the engine between the engine and the engine mounts. Requires a couple of extentions and swivals but it can be done. Helps to have a second person to help guide the socket onto the bolts...there are 3.
