The angle of the fuel guage pickup can change things
IF it's bent downward you would see great mileage on the top
1/2 of tank because the fuel is really well above where the needle FIRST said full.
IF this is bent bad enough you could get into a situation where you run out of fuel
above the "E".
The reverse is also possible where the hand says "E" but you still have 50 miles left.
Every vehicle is different and you need to learn your truck if you want to use the
whole tank. I've been down to 6 miles to empty using my overhead, Hand on the "E".
That as close to empty as i ever want to go. I was out of my area and couldn't find a station with Diesel.

hott-rodd is right. every truck is different. you just need to learn the quirks of yours.

ive ran mine past 0 to empty and still had at least 2 gal left but ive also had it say 60 miles to empty and ran out! i never trust these things dont even look at it youll be better off
