I had the day off (Columbus Day) and decided to do a few more mods.
I cut the end off my AIH, did the CCV mod, and disco'd the wastegate. It felt like it would spool up a little quicker and had a little more midrange power.
Up next will be a walker BTM, and probably a wicked wheel. After that it'll be time for guages. I know, I know, guages should of come first, but I figure with all these little mods my EGTs shouldn't be rising.........if anything they have dropped from the total stock setup. But now that I'm about done with the freebee mods its time to start pushing some real power to it.
IAH = Intake Air Heater... used by the engine on cold starts when the truck idles for awhile... it heats up the air that is going into the engine to help minimize white smoke and help the engine warm up and run a little smoother when it is cold...
yes my young padewan... to jedi master kwik... listen you must... or ruin your powerstroke you will...!

Is the IAH the thing that makes my exhaust hiss when it sits in my driveway and warms up? It does that until i tap the gas, then the hissing stops. When i asked my local diesel mechanic what the heck it was, they told me it was a little flap thing or something that makes the motor warm up faster. He told me i could disconnect it, but he wasn't sure if it would cause any problems. I told him i didnt think it would becuase my cummins never had one...etc.
So, is that what this is, and how do i go about unhooking it, and what does unhooking it do to improve the performance of my engine?
Sorry for being a newbie, but it's the nature of the beast i guess.
between your air filter box intake tube and the tube that connects to the intake side of the turbo, there is a round thermo plastic piece, it is black, and if you look on the bottom of it there is a hose that connects it to a piece that sits on top of the drivers side valve cover... this feeds the crankcase gases into the air that is going into the turbo... lots of guys undo this, replace the thermoplastic piece with a pipe and connect a hose to the valve cover piece and run the fumes out the back of the truck or into the exhaust pipe...

no, i think that is somethings else... i forget what it is call but the IAH doesn't make any noise... it is just a big heat coil that is in your y-pipe... it blocks about 20% of your intake passage in your y-pipe...
The hissing noise is your exhaust back pressure valve. The EBPV's job is to make some back pressure so the engine will labor a little and warm up faster. If you live in an area that never gets very cold you can disconnect it without concern of damage. If you live in an area that gets arctic cold then you are better off keeping it connected.
