Do you think there is any chance you got dirt in the injector lines while changing the IP?
If it is rattling you may still be advanced to much.
After 20 minutes of running you should have all the air worked out of the lines unless it is sucking air somewhere.

How many miles are on the injectors?

i don't think so. i caped the injectors when i took the lines off and placed the lines on the picnic table out of the way so i wouldn't get them dirty. it dosn't smoke at ideal now, but it sure does when i give it fuel. i call a guy that works on the company trucks that i work for to see if he could time it for me. have to call tomorrow because he had gone home for the day. i knew the guy i talked to and he said that he thinks they do. he takes care of the gasser and the other one takes care of the diesels. so i guess i am going to have to throw in the towel and see if he will look at it tomorrow. don't know what else to do. kinda lost here.

OK, so the injectors should be up to the new IP.
Also sounds like you were careful during installation.

This is hard not seeing or hearing the engine run.
I am still going to say it is timing.

Do you think there is any possibility that the IP drive gear was able to hop a tooth on the cam gear?

well i did mark the pin that it sits on with the gear houseing so if it did move i could put it back. i had forgotten that there is one place left in town that still does some diesel work. i called him and it goes in friday morning. he kinda thinks along the same thing you said. so i am going to take it to him and see what he says. when i called i talked to his son first. told him i needed it timed and at first he said that the tranny had to be removed to timed the motor. something about a gear. i then told him what i was talking about. then he said i needed to talk to his dad about the pump. do you have any idea what he is talking about??????

Well if he did not tell you the rear axle has to come out with the tranny, he don't have a clue what he is doing. I bet your computer needs reflashed and a chip put in it as well.

Back in the real world,
Talk to dad, the kid don't have a clue.
All the drive gears that set the timing for the crank, cam and IP are on the front of the motor.

That has to be another first, pull tranny to set timing. When you pull the tranny the starter is removed first. Can't pull start the engine with the tranny out. Wonder how he is going to start the engine to check the timing?

Sorry for the strange sense of humor, I have a lot going on right now and am a bit wound up.
I will make it through it though, I just hope you can stand me in the mean time.

No computer in your truck, I was just refering to a post a couple of days ago that someone told a member his 86 needed a chip to make it run right.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=502944

I am rebuilding my own motor right now, it is still in the machine shop and I am waiting for parts. So I know exactly how that goes. Funny thing is I am having things done to the engine that they have never heard of. They build a lot of race motors and big diesels, I am the first hot rod diesel they have ever done the machine work on. They are a good machine shop, but I tell them I want this part cut to that and their jaws drop. Next statement is I never heard of doing that before. I am giving myself a test to see if I am as good as I think I am, it is going to be a lot of fun when it is done if it all works like it should. Time will tell that story.

On the job front, we are scheduling work now for next year already, working 5 10's now, may be doing 6 soon.

I am taking on the city I live in on two issues going up against two different lawyers on my own.

And I have a rather large yard to take care of in between that lays like all land does in WV. /\/\

Then there is also the wife and the 16 year old son that asks 12,367,984 questions a day about the total rebuild he is doing on his 79 KLX 250 motorcycle.

I don't know why my sense of humor gets to be either strange or sarcastic at times.
You have no computer, the tranny does not have to come out, neither does the rear axle and a chip can only go in the glove box, ashrtray or on the floor.

cool.... scared me for second there. i hear you about family life, got a wife ( rooling eyes in my head) and two sons 13 and 16. my 13 year old is a lover and the 16 likes to turn wreches like his old man. i just got a rolling frame and we are planning to put the cab of a 59 chevy on it. as far as the hotrod diesel thing it sounds pretty good and the way you have help me out on here i have no doubt that it will work. worked on stock cars alot( hence the username). pretty good with them but when it comes to this diesel, well lets put it this way it humbled me real quick. oh well hopefully it will be back on the road again friday. good luck with your truck and the lawyer thing hope everthing works out for ya.

I hope he can get you going.
IDI diesels are rather simple motors once you understand the basics.
They do have some quirks that can drive you nuts, but once you get a handle on how they act it is usually easy to fix.

Since there are no electronics to help with diagnosing trouble, you have to use sight, sound and smell to locate the problem.

I had a local garage call me asking about a Power Stroke and a strange sound it made sometimes. I replied I am not a Power Stroke guy, but I would look at it. Power was down, smoke was very black and there was a strange whistling sound sometimes that sounded like it was in the engine.
Sounds like a turbo hose clamp is leaking from the first thoughts.
Start looking at all the clamps ou to the intercooler and back to the turbo.
Get to the turbo and all looks good and tight.
Wait a minute, there is black soot around the downpipe to turbo exhaust connection.
Look at the exhaust pipe.
Crimp in the pipe where it turns to go out the side of the bed behind the rear tire.
Driver must have been backing up and caught the pipe on something that did not touch the truck body anywhere.
Here those guys were looking under the hood all afternoon to find the problem since that is where the sound was coming from.
Took ten minutes and the real problem was behind the rear tire.
And I don't even like Power Strokes because of all the electronics.

Give that old IDI a little time to grow on you, and you a little time to learn it's temperment. It will become your most trusted and reliable vehicle.
Mine rates higher than my wife does in my eyes, the truck and I have been through more and been together longer than I have been married.

well i drop it off this morning....... the guy called me about midafternoon and i went through all that i had done to it. so i guess they are as lost as i am. that was the first time i drove it with the new pump and i did notice a big difference in the way it drove. it really took off when i gave it some fuel, but man did it smoke. couldn't see if somebody was comeing up behide me or not. it did kinda thin out when i got going but when i stopped and took off again it would start smoking again. will stop by there tomorrow and check to see how things are going.

well the shop just called.................. he did a compresion test on it. #1 is about half of what it is suppose to be. he is going to pull the value cover off and do a value lash measure on it to see if i dropped a value. he said i might have broke a ring and i am getting blow bye. so that is where i am at right know. i told him to pull the cover and take a look see and i would take it from there. guess either way i am looking at a rebuiled. man i was hopeing for a air leak or something simple, but not this.
