i would check that through the glow plugs..... right????????? and i was wondering on the timing. is a diesel set up like a gasser or are they different and how do you check and/or adjust?
Compression is tested through the glo plug holes but you will need a diesel compression tester. As for the timing i would advise that you take it to a diesel shop and have them check/set it.Special tools required. To set it they will rotate the injection pump with the engine off, check(start engine) and repeat untill its right. Is the injection pump orignal?
as far as i now yes...... will have to find a diesel shop around here then, probally should have from the start. i got home from work this morning and it didn't smoke at all. took the kids to school and a block away from the house it puffed out a cloud and then quit when i shifted from 2nd to 3rd. it still idealing a little rough, but i got no fuel in the oil. been checking that everyday to make sure and getting my fuel from some place else. i still say that might have been the start of it. it pured like a kitten before that.
Go back to reply #42 from farmfly, the plunger he is talking about,if your idleing and push the advance in with your finger the engine should stumble,at least that will tell you that most likely the timing advance is working. If it dosent stumble that will tell you the pump needs work or rebuild.
went out and pushed the plunger in and it did not stumble at all. i also notice some wetness (diesel) on the valley pan. so with that i am assumeing that the pump is bad. with me driving this, will it do any damage to it. i check around here for a pump and it is about 600$ for a rebuilt. don't have that kinda money right now. just don't want to any more damage to it.
ok..... i just drove to work and i sat at a stop for a little while, now it seams to load up on fuel cause when i took off it somked until i went into 2nd. then it was fine. ? is would the injector pump be bad if it is getting fuel or has the other pump taken over if it is not working??????? or maybe i am just trying to get out of buying the injector pump. just a little confuseing to me.
I had the same problem with my old 89 7.3, turned out it was a porous block from the factory, was mixing the oil and water, a little a first then eventually turned into a smoke machine. re-built and sleeved the engine added banks turbo ran great for 40,000 miles then just opened up the block. sold it and bought gas, still miss the diesel though.
well i got fuel in my oil again. guess it is time for the pump. has anybody on here order one on line and where did you get it. i found one that is a lot cheaper then going up to the parts store. just want to know if they are reliable as the 600$ one here. thanks
If you are getting fuel in the oil, is it possible the leak could be from the lift pump? Years ago I had a gas engine with this problem. It turned out the diaphragm in the fuel pump had a leak allowing the fuel into the crank case. The lift pump on these engines look like a gasser so I guess it's possible.
