What color is the smoke while idling after it is warmed up?
If you smell the smoke, does it have any distinctive smell?

it is white(alot of it at start) and no real smell to it. be a stock car builder at one time that is the first thing i did. it does have a slight diesel smell but, but not real heavy. it kinda smelled like bleach but i figure that was in my head. i live on a pretty busy road and you get all kinds of smells coming from the traffic that goes by.

White smoke is usually unburnt fuel with cold engines.

Mine is gray, it has been working since 86, but I do clean it out often.

I am thinking late timing could cause this. But if it was that retarded, it should be a bit on the sick side as far as power goes.

ok....... i went out and check my oil, just to see if it was a head gasket. water level is the same, but the oil was over a bunch. i did a oil change on it last weekend and a friend stop by, well i must of lost count of how much i put in i hope. drain it out and started it back up. don't know if it was because it has sat for a while but it didn't smoke near as much as it did. that might have been it. guess we will see.

Smell the oil to see if it smells like diesel.Sometimes the diaphram in the mechanical fuel pump on the side of the block can rupture letting fuel go into the base.

it does smell like diesel. that would cause the smoking right?????? so it sounds like a new fuel pump. is it set up like a gas pump or are they differnet.

Yes set up like a gasser pump however follow the instructions as to the location of the cam on the pump.Get that oil changed asap, that fuel will play havoc on your internals.

justto help out a bit .. nose is talkin about the fuel lift pump blowing the diaphragm. It does have a weep hole in the side to let the fuel out but sometimes does not do the job. The injection pump also has a weep hole in the very bottom of the mounting neck and real honey to get your finger on to see if it is leaking. But that might show up in the valley pan if it leaks enough.
