Strange electrical problem

This is on my 1970 F100. At idle with the headlights off, the tach and lights in the cab go nuts. Turn the lights on, and everything calms down. Any ideas? My first thought is an intermittent short at or near the light switch assembly. I'll know more Friday afternoon.

Sounds like the pot that dims the interior lights is shorting when the light switch is in. Have you repeatedly dimmed and brightend the interior lights, making full turns of the dimmer switch? This somethimes helps clean it up some. Alot of times these dimmers don't get used much. I forgot mine was even there for a while. Now I try to use it frequently so that it makes a decent contact.

Strange electrical problem

Could it be the voltage fluctuating from the alternator, and when you apply a large load the regulator "calms down" ?????
That is if you mean lights flashing dim to bright, and electric tach bouncing.

It turns out the problem was one of the two power wires for the stereo. As soon as I unplugged it, the tach settled down. Darn stereo doesn't have any speakers at the moment, so no harm in pulling the plug.
