brake light & reverse light

When I depress my brake pedal my left reverse light comes on and no brake light. The tail lights work fine and the right lights work correctly. What could be crossed? Could the plugs be mixed up in the rear?

Anthony, What has been changed recently. From what you described, I think the wires are crossed at the ls tailight. When you put it in reverse and the right side lights does the brake light on the drivers side light up?

There is one wire to the rear for the tails & license plate. One for backup. One each for left & right side turn signal/brake.

I would start at the rear of the truck.

I just bought it a few months ago and am working on issues like this. Nothing comes on when it is in reverse. Someone cut a trailer connector off so I think some things are crossed are undone. I will get out the test light and do some sorting.

Yup, Test light is your best friend when working on those issues. Bet you will have it straightened out in 30 minutes.

There are only FOUR wires going to the rear(from the factory):

L Turn (brake)
R Turn (brake)
Back up
Running lights

There is a plug right up under the drivers side frame rail by the end of frame. Tracking which is which isn't too hard.

I got my rear signal lights working but cannot get the rear brake light to work. The reverse lights have been coming on when I pushed the brake pedal, that's because someone wired the revese lights to the brake light switch uder the dash. I found the correct red/black stripe wire for the brake light switch and connected it. I have power passing through the brake light switch and to the plug on the steering column but no power is passing through the geen & yellow wires that go to the back. This leads me to believe the turn signal switch has issues. What do you guys think? My hazzard flashers come on but don't flash, tail lights work, turn signals work, reverse lights don't because they are disconnected from the switch. I do have a wiring diagram, they are priceless. This is on a '70. Any input is appreciated.

Time to inspect the turn signal switch. I'd bet there is a broken wire or broken contact.

Using the wiring diagram, you should be able to trace the wires IN and OUT of the switch and see which one is not working.

The brake (stop) lamp switch mounts to the brake pedal.

A/T: At the bottom of the steering column is the NSS (neutral safety switch), this operates the backup lamps.

There are TWO different flashers, one for the turn signals, a H/D flasher used with the 4 way emergency flashers (hazard lights).

Thanks, guys. I figured out it was for sure the contacts in the turn signal switch. NumberDummy helped me locate a NOS unit close to me.

Now I have to rewire the NSS as the PO wired the brake light switch to the reverse lights instead of replacing the turn signal switch. I rewired the brake light switch the was the factory intended.

If I'm coing to be pulling a camper shouldn't I install the HD flasher for both the turn signals and emergency flashers to handle the extra load of the two additional lamps on the camper brake/turn lights?

Yes, on the HD flasher relay. If not, they will flash really fast.

H/D flasher can be subbed for T/S flasher and was with trailer tow and for peeps that are deaf, because it has a loud CLICK.

But, T/S flasher should not be subbed for 4 way flasher, cuz it's a "weak sister."
