Installed pre-pump....pump

For those that have not been following some of the recent discussions HERE, and HERE are some background reading.

I got the pump installed this afternoon, and despite only having two short test drives, there are a few things I noticed right off the bat.

First and most obvious...it starts faster/easier. Like touch the key and it's running, first revoloution kind of fast.

Second...the idle has changed. It now is a deeper more aggressive "big truck" kind of sound. Additionally, the clack, clack, clack of the two (or three) suspect bad injectors I have is much diminished. Sounds good.

Third. Adding this pump does indeed qualify as a power mod. The first time I pinned the throttle the smoke just rolled, and didn't clear until I was above 23-24psi boost. Prior to the pump I could completely clear it before 20, and my peak boost is just under the peg on my 35psi gauge...up from 30-31 max yesterday, so the powerband it improved as well. I haven't had my butt calibrated in a couple of years, but it feels like it could be as much as 30 additional horsepower. This could be the result of the afore mentioned suspect injectors, or it may be pushing that much more fuel.

Installation is as simple as hanging one bracket, adding some new line, and two wires. An absolute breeze for those with a previously modified fuel system. If stock...it will be necessary to access the top of the tank to run new fuel (3/8"i.d) line, so that will add to the difficulty level.

I am eagerly awaiting PSNut's completion of the same project so that we can compare notes.

Wow, that's great. I so want to do the tank/fuel mods. I'm waiting for a day off so I can lie to my wife and tell her I had catastrophic failure of the truck. I can do all the mods and look like the hero for saving money. "...yeah, Honey...uh... I hit a raccoon and he hit the fuel lines and banged up the tank..."

So this is basically a low pressure high volume pump you are putting in to feed the main pump?

Correct. 72gph/4-6psi w/ no regulator needed.

I'm also installing an inline billet 75 micron screen mesh filter to catch the big chunks. Picked it up from Diesel Manor for $110.

Cookie, Could you explain what you did to the in this mod starting from the fuel tank to the engine. I need all the specifics if you can from brand names to microns ratings, and size of fuel lines. I am planning on doing several mods to my truck. I just dont what the fuel system to hurt my performance. Thanks for the help.

Nut I went with that same filter, and when I did the prepump line I went ahead and replaced the entire line from the tank to the pump since when I went to just do the ends and leave the hard line on mine we think that someone at Ford messed up and used 2 return lines for my fuel line because the supply hard line is identical in size to the return line and I could just slip 3/8" hose over it with ease so just installed a complete new hose.
I have an old holley Red pump sitting here from one of my previous trucks that is still in good shape now I am gonna hve to go out and put it on and see how it works for this I sure can't think of a reason that it wouldn't work as well since I believe they are rated at 90gph.
So Cookie I am curious where did you run your wires to? just an ignition hot or did you splice into the fuel pump feed so it runs the same as the factory pump?

I was looking at the F.A.S.S. last night when I got done. That is essientially what I did...a DIY FASS. I even mounted th pump on the bracket I made for the Vormax, so it kind of looks like it belongs there.

jrciii56 Without going into detail, but giving you lots of search criteria: Pre pump mod, in tank mod, harpoon mod, pre pump filter, regulated return system. And now a pre pump pump......I'll get a picture of it later today and get it up.

I tapped the factory pump harness so the little pump would cut out with the big pump. Frame grounded.

so basically this is a "lift Pump" design that is somewhat like the duramaxes' fuel system? if i am reading this right, it is basically a pump that supplies the main pump with fuel, so it doesn't have to suck the fuel out of the tank, all it has to do is pressurize it, correct? i would like to see some pics too.

A good idea and that's what i plan on doing too because i noticed the main lift pump is on an inertia shutoff switch in case of an accident. Shuts down fuel flow. The main pump is protected by a 20Amp fuse and i was wondering if i should up that to say a 30Amp.
