Intercooler on a '97

Anyone here done this or seen it? i don't wanna buy a banks kit for $1700 just for an intercooler. Are there any out there that would go in without too much modification? I'm game for doing customizing, but don't have too much money to put into this. Any help or info is apprieciated.

I agree! I got a 6.0 intercooler off ebay for about 60 bucks(good deal!)
And am waiting on my kit from GTS to get it installed! Total is about 700 bucks! Beats the hell out of the $1400-1500 for the banks kit!

Hey just food for thought. How can banks get 120hp more than stock, out of stock injectors? It is just a chip, intake, turbo housing, exhaust and intercooler. Also is it worth it to buy one of banks intercoolers for less pressure loss compared to a stock SD 7.3, or 6.0 ic? Some say like 2-4 psi loss from an ic. Compare $1400 for banks to ~$800 for a gts kit and used ic. Is $600 worth 2-4 psi more boost? Just thinking

They have split shot injectors, right? Anyways cowboyup if you are looking for performance you can spend that $1400 for the banks intercooler and buy...
1) gauges about $300
2) exhaust $400
3) intake (tymar or napa 6637 filter) $100
4) chip (dp tuning flip chip) $400
All that for $1200 give or take. You didnt tell us much about your truck but just adding an intercooler wont help much performance wise.

I have 5" straight stacks on my '96. Looks great, sounds excellant, but will lower your fuel milage!!!!!!

The reason i say it will lower the fuel milage is you will always be wanting to hear the rap at full throttle! hehe!!!!! Definitly will turn heads!

an intercooler will increase performance since your getting a denser colder air charge. it dosnt make a huge differnce and the other supporting mods need to be in there like a 1.0ar exaust housing to help it spool faster. if you tow alot the ic is a big gain on the large hills, you will be able to run the hills harder and faster since it keeps the egt's lower. in my case i saw a increase in fuel mileage by 1-2mpg i credit the cooler air getting into the motor from this one.

i have had the aluminum 7.3 intercooler in the truck with some 130cc injectors and the gts pipe kit and it worked great. the 7.3 ic is good to about 300rwhp mark im running a differnt injector now and needed more intercooler so i have the hypermax taper core in the truck now.

its about a 8-10 hr install start to finish.

info

I Have a 96 PSD with that all the Banks goodies, except the intercooler, I do want one, but don't like the price, anyways I was told that my chip needs to be reflashed for more fuel output if I put a charge air cooler (intercooler) on, is this true, will it hurt anything with what I have, just wondering. And does anyone know what the difference between the 6.0 intercooler and the 7.3, if any difference??

i would just go with the SD ic with the GTS pipes then. does the banks kit have a 1.0ar exaust housing? the way most of the aftermarket programming it its already close to the fueling limits of the injectors i wouldnt worry a ton about getting the chip burned yet. i would get the ic in and see how it runs then you can go from there.

Not to hyjack the thread, but Westtntrucker, you don't see a KW crossing a creek like that everyday. I'm assuming that's your truck? Cool picture.
