I have an '87 f-150 302 4x4. The transmission is AOD. I've only owned the truck for 2 months. Two days ago the transmission started slipping. I parked at the bank today and when I went to leave Reverse won't work it would just rev up. If I put it in N it would pull forward. I checked the transmission fuild and it is full. The truck has 139,000 mi. Should I have the transmission rebuilt, get a new one, or get a used one? How much would a new transmission cost? And if I had it rebuilt, how long could I expect it to last? This is really making me mad. I had a 93 explore that had transmission proplems.
Thanks for any help.
emed, i would change the tranny oil and filter and clean anything you see obstructing.... had same issue with my dad's dodge ram, cleaned it, oiled it up and changed filter and started running again but now i need to install the supports for it.
I would do as delta suggests and have the fluid changed and a new filter and gasket installed. If it's still doing it, then you are probably looking a a rebuild.
Scratch "buy a new tranny" off the list. Your options are to get a used one, which may very well have the same problems or worse, or have the one you have rebuilt.
General guidelines when picking a repair shop are: stay away from any chain with more than about two shops. Find a local, reputable tranny shop that has been around for a long time. Get a warranty. Most of the good shops will give you a decent warranty on the tranny so if there are problems, they will cover you.
well tru andy but keep in mind when tranny issues are happening..you can install used tranny and sell your truck and get better one.....or you can go hunt for a reputable tranny shop that will give you half of them in miami at least give 6 month warranty which is crap....but yah.....or your other choice get a new one.....if you really love ur truck and planning to stay with it so no issues happen. I would install it on my own" just for simply to know how my truck really is... i dont let anyone touch it....thats just me
Sounds to me like you have a shift adjustment issue. From your description it would appear that when your shift lever is showing reverse the trans is actually in neutral and when showing neutral it is in drive. Have the shift cable or linkage adjustment checked first.
as soon as that pan comes down you will know whats needed. with that many miles the unit has most likely seen maybe one or two if any services. and i bet you find it sludged up and full of clutch disc and band material plus metal from worn out planitary gear sets and bushings .
take it to a very good but not big name shop near you in KY. as i agree with with andym about the chain name shops .
I'm having the same troubles with mine too. I'm away at school right now and haven't had the chance to look at it but before I had to leave it behind at my parents house I had checked my linkage and that wasn't it.
I'm about as lost as you are but I've been told to check the springs in the forward clutch pack.
I think I'm going to try the same things suggested here and replace the filter and fluid before I bring it to a shop.
Just out of curiousity: is it okay for us to drive these beasts to the tranny shop (because theoretically they will go forward) or should we get them towed?
i would say is a 50 /50 chance, because if you drive it and there's something broke inside it will get worse...yet you will be paying almost same to fix whole tranny...in my case i would drive it and save the tow money if its not that far.
