Rebuilding/Replacing Transmission in 92 f250 4x4

Any ideas on how difficult it is to rebuild or perhaps replace an automatic transmission in a 92 f250 4x4? Im not sure of the engine...Im looking at acquiring a third truck for my business, and theres one on craigslist for 1200 with a blown transmission (I'll offer him less of course). I know the transmissions are around 1500 rebuilt with a torque converters. First, I am curious as to how difficult it is to do drop these transmissions. I know on a 4x2 you just drop the driveshaft, unhook the shift linkages, a few wires, and unbolt the transmission essentially. But beyond that, like with the torque converter, I'm lost. Also, how difficult is it to rebuild one of these? I would like to attempt this as I have done a few other major projects before. Do I need a bunch of special tools? How much time should one spend doing this? Any information would be helpful. Also, I tried the search function, but I had a hard time trying to find a thread on replacing/rebuilding a transmission, they were all mostly troubleshooting transmission problems.

If you can rent a tranny jack its fairly easy to pull and replace a tranny, I did a E4OD 4x4behind a diesel last year, in and out was less than 6hrs... If you buy a decent rebuilt it'lll cost as much or more than that truck though.... Rebuilding will take some skills...and a few specialty tools...I wouldn't recommend it unless you can get somebody with experience to give you a hand.....

BTW,a used C6 3speed could be a cheaper option for ya...

Wow. Thats a nice write-up there, thanks! Thanks for the information. Yeah, I know buying a rebuilt will be as much as the asking price of the truck, which is why I plan on offering him less.
