Thanks for the great info Capt. I did a few mods to my 99 (Borla headers/catback and drop in K&N) and never had any issues. I liked the added power. 130,000 miles and not one CEL. This 05 is another beast all together. I'm leaning towards just leaving it alone. I'll tinker with the muffler but that's gonna be it.
I now consider it a "tuneup" item to be done at every (or every other) oil change (I run into the 3-months change interval way before I hit 1K miles).
Basically, every MAF-equipped car (Ford and GM) I've ever had my hands in (only 10 or so), the MAF was dirty. And everytime I cleaned them, it woke right up.
This is a good thread, but my question for you guys that are talking about cleaning the MAF.
How is that done? What kind of ?spray? is used? Sounds like it is easy...at least by the way you have talked about it.
Thanks,
biz

ford uses paint dots on either the MAF or the PS bracket , its not to prevent tampering. ford uses it as a check sheet each color equals a item which has been installed and inspected. there should be blue, orange , purple ,green, yellow and pink. that is from a friend who works on the assembly line in canada.
Not what I meant.
Every MAF I've seen has a "seal" on the screws, as in, if you tamper with them, it will be obvious because the paint will be broken. Either that, or it's a loctite type thing, but I doubt it.
Ok...just pull off the screws and the MAF comes right out? No special tabs or anything like that?
Thanks,
biz
Nope.
Be careful, when I took mine off (albeit an '01) one of the brass inserts turned in the plastic. And no, I didn't muscle it, it was quite free before I touched it (and the paint mark wasn't disturbed).
Can anyone describe to me where I should start to look for my MAF Sensor on a 00 V10? And what does it look like?
Here are a couple (not specific to the V10, but pretty much the same thing)...this is what you will be looking for. The MAF sensor is just past the air filter housing. Hope this helps some...
Do you have to remove the MAF to clean it since you can easily see it and spray right on it?
Is brake cleaner really ok to use? Some of them say not to use around plastic or rubber.
Do you squirt a few short blasts or really spray it down?
I removed my K&N and went back to paper filter after getting a miss and stumble right off idle. I just did a few short squirts of brake cleaner and the problem was cured. If using electronics cleaner and really hosing it down is better, I'll do that.
Thanks

It depends on how dirty the MAF is - I've done it one a few different vehicles including my modulars, and even with paper filters, they all got dirty.
My V10's was dirty but it only took a shot or two of brake cleaner to clean it right off. My mother-in-law's Buick was FILTHY with 30K miles on it (so much for AC/Delco filters). And it took a q-tip (or acid brush) to really get all the dirt off.
Brake cleaner works fine. I would remove the MAF sensor from the housing before cleaning it.
