cab air filter
For some reason Ford Escape does not have a filter but Mazda Tribute does. The air intake box is the same, it has the proper recesses for the filter on the Ford, and the Mazda replacement filter fits the Escape. Go figure.
To install the Mazda part on an Escape, first remove the two plastic screw-pins along the passenger front lip of the cowl that fasten the black plastic trim below the windshield to the cowl itself. On the Tribute, the two similar plastic fasteners located along the rear edge of this plastic trim piece, near the edge of the windshield glass, are also plastic screw-pins. Remove them, and the plastic trim piece can be lifted completely off. On the Escape, they are press-in pins that are not meant to be removed over and over. So, I decided not to pull them out. But, if you are very careful (and I mean careful - you could easily snap the plastic piece in two), you can lift and flex the front of the cowl plastic cover up enough to slip the filter element in without removing the rear plastic pins. The best solution would be to buy the cheap plastic screws from Mazda and replace the pins, but who has time?
The filter seats firmly in a lip on the air box - no clamps, etc. Be careful when sliding and flexing the trim piece back into place that the two plastic arms on its underside slip over the filter like they should. There is a diagram with the filter that shows how it should slide into place. I just did this swap on my 2004 Escape. I bought three of the filters on ebay, some guy was selling the Mazda factory part for about $4.00 each. I think this is pretty cheap, they are about $10 or so at Mazda. The Mazda part number is:
00008MG01
The box is labeled as "Genuine Mazda Accessories", followed by "Cabin Air Filter for Mazda Tribute".

Neither models come with one from the factory. Installation is a 5 minute ordeal and the filters are available at NAPA. The filter just cleans up the incomming air that is brought into the vents. After changing mine at 10,000 miles, I'm amazed at how much stuff was embedded in the filter. Well worth the effort. Fram CA4303 at Wal-Mart is $6. Just to confirm what DoctorCAD posted; we just purchased a 2005 Mazda Tribute and it did not have a cabin filter installed. On my way in 5 minutes to pick up one and put it in though. Thanks for the link for the install; great information!
how to do it for 2005 escape
Where is the cabin filter in the 2005 escape, is it same as 2004? I follow the instruction on http://members.***.net/karomel/cabin_air_filter.htm I unscrew the 4 plastic screws, lift the cover, there is another black box that doesnt look like the one posted on that site. Seems like you can take out that black box, but I couldn't lift the first plastic cover high enough to get that black box out. Anyone know how to put the filter in ?
