Starter Burn out

I have a 390 in a 73 F100 and I have headers so I was just curious as to how you guys that have the same setup keep from burning up your starters all the time.I have burned out two since I have had the headers on,When ever I burn one up I just go get a free replacment from oriellys but after awhile their gonin to start asking question.Plus its not the easiest thing in the world to change starters when your running headers. But in the long run I would still rather have headers than manifolds.the manifolds break and crack to easy.

Starter Burn out

there are three ways to stop burning up your starters, first geta heat shield for the starter(easiest), or you could wrap the headers (tougher to do, headers need to be removed to do this.) this way also makes the headers rot out faster, because it traps moisture, last you could get a smaller high torque starter(pricey)

Starter Burn out

I haven't had any problems on my truck yet, and I've put on 15,000 miles or so over two years

Starter Burn out

I'd get the ThermTec starter wrap and then make a steel shield for the back of the starter. the wrap covers the body of the starter but leaves the back of the starter open. I took a sheet of galv steel and cut it to fit where I could cover all of the back of the starter and then drilled a hole and wired it to the header. This helps with the hot air blowing against the back of the starter.

Starter Burn out

I've never had any problems with my Hedman Elite headers affecting my starter (knock on wood). My starter is just a cheapo rebuild too!

The headers sit like 2 inches from the starter and it is easy to change (like 2 minutes).

Starter Burn out

I just put a CRV 4to1 starter in my pick up. I have Doug Thorly headders in a 76F250 390 C6 w/AC. I had to make pretty major modifications to the starter to make it fit and work properly. In my case the headder must come off to get the starter in and out. I personaly would go with a heat sheild on a good remanufactured starter if I were to do it again. Hope you figure it out. P.S. I got 5 new starters before they caut on to me.
