Headers burning up starter

I have a '73 F100, 390 CI, C6 trans, 2WD that has been warmed up with performance cam, Edelbrock intake and carb, headers, etc.. I have only about 1/2" clearance between the headers and the starter and have lost three starters in three months since installing the headers. Short of going back to stock exhaust manifolds, what can I do to preserve the starter. I have no objections to buying more expensive headers if they will provide better clearance.

Install a heat shield on the starter. Jeg's sells them or you can make one out of aluminum. I personally robbed some heat shielding out of a late model car's engine compartment and fabbed my own.

Wow, you have 1/2" between the starter and header??..I am lucky to have 1/8"..One starter in 50,000 miles, knock on wood, and no heat shield..Are you using the stock size starter or a mini?..A mini might help..If you don't mind spending the money on better headers get coated ones, heard it helps with the heat..Also go with the heat shield..

My mustang had about a 1/4" and it wouldnt start hot. I bought a heat sheild, pn THE-14150, from summit racing and it actually fixed the whole problem. I was surprised!
