When I install my stacks, I am considering removing the cat. Is this legal with emission standards, or are diesels exempt from these laws (specifically in NJ)? I know there was some talk recently about creating new emissions laws for diesels. Also, where is the best place to get the piping and clamps to get the job done? My kit for the stacks from Black Cloud came with an addaptor for 3.5", so that is the size pipe I'll replace the cat with. How do I couple the new pipe to the pipe in front of where the cat used to be?
Also, when I see the stacks with black smoke pumping out, how does that happen? Is that a result of a chip/tuner or lack of a cat? Whatever it is, it's bad ***.
its not legal but take a poll and you find many have done it. do you have a stock down pipe? if you do i would recommend replacing it and the expand you pipe right off that to 4 inch then into your stack system.
the smoke is unburned fuel by a truck with too much chip (fuel) for the air that is provided. while this looks cool i am not a fan of blowing unburned fuel into the air as is expensive to put in. now if i had 4 position chip and i could blown smoke everynow and then you bet i would but not all the time!

Reason: misspelling
if the truck came with a cat from the factory then you might get away with out it or put an emty cat on, the ony diesel emmissions test in nj is a smoke test for trucks 18,000lbs and up, my 89 has duel stright pipes loud as all hell. they looked at it for 5 min then tested the lights and brakes then slaped on the 2 year sticker
I am working with Dale at Tymar right now putting togethr a new exhaust system. His recommendation: Replace the cat with a resonator. It is a hollow device that looks very much like a cat. Save your original. If you ever have a need to put it back on, you'll be glad you saved it because new ones are very expensive.
This is the gospel according to Dale.
I guess I really got his attention. I had it in low lock, granny gear and was pulling my uncles tractor (Rig) from the corner (where it broke down) to his house (1/2 block away). It was singing about 2,200 rpms. I imagine it was quite loud when that open pipe past his open cruiser window at about 5 mph. He was sitting in the middle of the block shooting radar.
I live in NY and I asked a shop who does inspections today about the cat issue today. He told me if the truck was over 8600 gvw it is exempt from a cat, which is good cause "I aint got one".
