How to install Stacks?

im wonderin whats a good way to put in straight stacks? no mufflers or Cats, just pipes, will this damage my engine in anyway? i was thinkin of going with a 7 or 8 inch pipe. where could i find a pipe of this size? and is it true that the bigger the pipe the louder the noise? thanks!

If you are talking chrome stacks, you will be shopping at a heavy truck parts house.
When you see the prices on pipe that big I think you will be downsizing.

I helped build a set of 4" stacks for a friends truck, we used 5 - 4" 90 degree elbows, 2 - 4" x 4 foot chrome stacks with turnouts, 11 - 4" muffler clamps. Total bill was over 600 dollars. His truck already had 4" exhaust on it. 2 of the elbows were used to make a Y to split the exhaust to the stacks. What you need to do is cut part of the outside of the elbow off on both of them so you can slide the elbows together and wind up with a Y that has 3 - 4" openings, once it is cut just right you weld it back together.

Cut a hole on the bed over the exhaust pipe running to the back of the truck.
Cut the pipe so when you slide one of the elbows on the end of the pipe it is aimed at the bed opening.
Mount the Y you fabricated to the elbow.
Now run pipe from the Y to elbows turned up again at the sides of the bed. ( Pipe on the drivers side is longer than the passenger side.)
Now mount your 4 foot stacks to the elbows.
A pair of muffler clamps attach the stacks to the top bed rail.

Caution, while driving the stacks and pipe to the stacks will get very hot, you need to mount a sheild to keep things in the bed from sliding into them while driving, the result could be a fire if you do not protect them.

I did a set on a flatbed that way as well wxcept the Y was mounted below the flatbed.
On mine the bed is a dump, so the stacks are in front of the bed mounted to the channel steel I hung my tool boxes on.

I hope you don't mean 7 or 8 inch diameter pipe, that would look rediculous.

if you look in my gallery, you will see some pics of the stacks on my 88.
i used 3 inch stainless flex to a "Y" made from two 3" 90's. then flex to the driver side , and welded to the passenger side. to go from below the frame up to under the cab, i used 2 90's welded together, then a piece of the 3" stainless flex to another 90 that goes through the floor of the bed to a 3-4 adapter, and the 4" stacks go into the adapter. total cost with 10 ft of 3" stainless flex, 5 band clamps, two 3" clamps, four 4" clamps, and the stacks was around $500. you can get the stacks from a place on ebay called the chrome room, or chrome shop or something like that. for 48" stacks with turnouts, they charge $120.

I used a y pipe from a big truck. I also picked up an adapter that went from 4" to 6". I ran 4" pipe on the truck, used 4" flex pipe (about 18" or so) to go from the exhaust on the truck to the 4" to 6" adapter then attached my y-pipe to the adapter. From there I just ran 6" pipe to the 90's and up to the stacks. Make sure that you use flex pipe that is made for big trucks and not the stuff you get at a general automotive store. Also, you would be best to invest in band clamps rather than u-bolt clamps for the flex pipe.
