Factory cd player problems

Have a 2003 STX with the factory installed Kenwood Z828 Head Unit. Problem right now is cds/cd-r's etc... do not play correctly. Songs will play but every 10-15 seconds the music will "stop" for a second then continue playing. It's almost like it's skipping but it's not jumping ahead. It is very consistent and does it on everything you put in. Reminds me of a lightly scratched LP the way it sounds. Any ideas?
