Ok guys I realy don't know what you mean by a "collapse filter".I had a Motorcraft FL1a fall apart on a 96 Explorer 4.0,the oil was 5W30 mobil1.What I mean by fall apart is that the filter media and center metal part came lose and was not attached to the filter case at all. This was about 3 months ago. This was the only filter I ever had to do this.
The point I'm trying to make is,it makes no diffreance what make filter you get,you just might get a bad one.2 of the same make is a little odd but it can happen.Just think how many 1000s of filters are made in a day,so I'm sure that some bad ones do get through.JMO.
I hope that you can prove that oil filter caused the engine failure and you can make them pay.It would be a drop in the bucket to them to fix your truck .SO GOOD LUCK!!

well after getting the filter off it was not collapsed...by collapsed i mean that the filter media pretty much gets sucked up in the pump...i will still send it in for a warranty claim and see what they can tell me...maybe the bypass was not working...im only trying to figure out what happened
In case anyone doesnt know, the 3387A filter does not have any internal by-pass/pressure relief system in the filter. The 3.8 GM engine and many other GM engines have it built into the engine.
The 3387A filter is a common filter and fits many different GM models and covers several years.
The E-Core design uses a nylon cage instead of the metal tube that most other filters have.It also replaced the metal endcaps with endcaps made out of a materiel that is supposed to help filtering. The endcaps are not glued in place but are held by a process that Champ calls, thermally bonded.
The endcaps are no longer a solid as most other filters have whether it is metal or cardboard or a plastic material. The endcaps are not a solid in the E-Core.
Sure sounds like the external by-pass on this engine has/had a problem, that caused the oil pressure to build to such levels, that it caused the filter media to collapse from ovepresure.
