Is it ok to use additives like stp thats versitile from the crankcase to the fuel tank and so on? And what about oil stabalizers like lucas? Main concern is stp as i have just recently put in my fuel tank and crank case.
If you're going to use an oil addtive, use one that is known and recommended for the 6.0:
-Archoil 9100
-RevX
-Hot Shot Secret
These are additives that are specifically designed for the 6.0. Addtives like Lucas, STP, Slick 50, and most of the other stuff on the shelf at Autozone, O'reilly Auto, or Walmart.
While the recommended stuff usually isn't available on the shelf, it's worth ordering from vendors to keep your truck running flawlessly.
Fuel side:
-Stanadye Blue or Red label
-Diesel Kleen Gray (summer) or White (winter) Label
-Diesel Extreme (use once every 6 months)
-Archoil AR6200
I'd just run it till the 5,000 mile interval and let that be that. No sense in spending money twice. If you had the Lucas oil stabilizer, I would tell you to change it. I ran that in my 7.3 Excursion and it ran like absolute crap.
This is a BIG subject with a lot of things to consider. I recommend doing some reading here and elsewhere on the net. If you click on search toward the top of any page and select advanced search you can type in oil addatives and change "all forums" to just the "6.0 diesel" forum. Another good place is a websight called Bob Is The Oil Guy (BITOG).
Most people have their favorites as far as addatives while others prefer to use none. Some are very adamant in their opinion. I'd ask what you want the addative to do, as some work better for a particular purpose than others. There is also some 6.0 specific (and just diesel specific) reasoning to consider, STP for example will thicken up the oil which can be good on a high mileage gasser but not so much on a engine that uses high pressure oil to operate the fuel injectors. I do agree with Toreador_Diesels post above about some of the more effective products on our trucks.
Please don't feel like I'm blowing you off by recommending some research on your part, as I said this is a huge topic and I could write many paragraphs and only touch the surface, AND there are many people here who know more about it than I do. Much if it has already been written and is here in the archives..
I don't think I would do an oil change just to get the STP out unless you start having new running issues. What brand/weight oil did you use for the oil change? It's important to use diesel rated oil and the proper Motorcraft/Raycor filter with a short cap.
No, I would not change it until the next change interval. Putting a can of STP in 14 quarts of oil is like pissing in the ocean and saying the tide rose.
When you do change oil, I would suggest a good synthetic oil and 1 quart of AR9100. I run my Royal Purple 20W-50 synthetic oil and AR 9100 10,000 miles between changes with no problems.
