Neat site, just found it.
I have just purchased a '88 Bronco ll 4x4 and didn't drive it long enough to find out that the previous owner had loaded it up with STP to keep the oil pressure up until after about 15 min, the oil pressure would drop like a rock. Now I'm in the process of trying to remove the oil pan to replace it but can't seem to get the motor high enough. Is there a trick to removing it, and the book says to "reach in and remove the pickup tube and baffle" Is the tube/baffle bolted? The Hanes book is not very informitive to a newbe.

just did my 88 bronco yesterday 2 wd, first pull the plenum and distributor, the undo the motor mount thru bolts under the vehicle. put either a hoist from the front and pull or a hydralic jack under the harmonic balancer, if you use a hoist only pull fro m the front you need the engine to tilt to the rear, pull the starter, make sure you take the bell housing inspection cover off the pan will hit the bolts, work the pan rearwords just as it hits the cross member turn the rear of the pan to the drivers side the pan will drop out side ways, word of warning dont use rtv on the gasket the front and rear will push out like s--t thru a goose, use 3m weatgerstrip adhevive on the pan side seat the gasket well and let set 2-3 hrs, then use felpro 2b where the pan meets the rear and front seals, this prevents any leaks, if you get stuck write back
Now, what you are calling "plenum" is that the upper manifold assy? Can I just remove the bolts holding it and move it forward to clear the firewall? ( I would be lost trying to get all the wires and vaccum lines back in place). How high would I have to raise the motor to get the pan off? (I had it about 2-1/2" high and didn't have enough to get the pan off) Also, how do I get the pickup tube and baffle out before I drop the pan? (I think that Haynes shoulda stayed with underwear with all the bad info they put in this book)
Thanks much
the upper manifold a pkenum are the same if you look close there are not that many vaccum lines to remember, use fingernail polish to color code the hoses and inlets, the distributor has to come off, in the Motor manual i use, you get a front lift of about 4-6", provided everythings off, you dont have to get the pickup tube off prior to dropping the pan, 1 word on my sons 88 we had to drop the exhaust and move it rearward my was back far enough we didnt have to. if you dont remove the plennum, you cant remove the distributor! and you run the risk of breaking the distributor housing, to make your life easier make sure the front is on ramps or jack stands, dont get in a hurry Ive done this several times and youll waste a good day doing it. just remeber to rotate the rear of the pan as soon as it clears the the bell housing. any other questions write back.
Well, I've come to the conclusion that the oilpan on a 1988 Bronco ll 4X4 CANNOT BE REMOVED IN THE VEHICLE. The engine has to be pulled to remove it. With the bell housing against the firewall, tha pan needs at least 2 more inches to clear the bell housing. Thanks anyway guys, I guess I'll just part her out.

borg tell me whereits hung up at if its just where the lip wont drop down below the bell housing, you can try a 2lb modification to the oil pan the lip facing the frame support, take a hammer and flatten the pan show it will drop down past the frame support dont give up yet write me with the engine size also we got several guys at the fire house who have the same problem all have different solutions rwr
The pan is sitting on the cross member, it will not rotate to the drivers side whatsoever. The pan needs to have about 1-1/2 in more clearance. I would have to flatten about 2" long and about 1" high, totally impossable to get any kind of swing with a hammer at that area. More ideas?

Did that, now I can't get the new one in and still can't get the pan off. Am trying to stick the pump rod in and bolting up the pump now. Guess I'll have to silicone the H&ll outa the pan with the old gasket still on.
