Thanks for the axle info fishmanndotcom. If I want to go with a 1ton what would I look for. I'm thinking I could dig one up in a scrap yard around here but I'm not overly sure of what to look for. Also do you think it would be cheeper to build my own exhaust or to buy a high flow bolt on kit.
if you run headers, i would reccomend buying a good set....it will be 3-500 bucks, you want the thickest flange you can get, thick tubes and some sort of coating
i have ran the landl's for three years, still not a sign of rust, not one leak
Limited slip is the right way to go, plus lockers run up in the $300-$600 range...and since your new to mudding if your going to be driving your truck on the road alot too...maybe think of a mean all terrain (maybe)...also make sure you have an extra U-joint with you when you go mudding---Bad past experience--- lol
Go For some TSL's there very good tire. They wear really good on the road and low highway noise. And they do very good off road. highly suggest geting the TSL's
Trak-Lok 8.8 (I've been told that unless you're doing XTR3ME off roading, the 8.8 will be fine) and the LSD is totally sweet off and on road, but it does like to wrap up.
5.0 with a K&N, larger injektors, and true dual exhaust (I don't Have to worry about emissions )
32x11.50r15 All season radials, I have yet to get in a spot I couldn't get out of.
If its an all around truck, IMO make it useable all the way around.
I have to agree with Fishy here why oh why would anyone spend a dime on putting a locker, or limited slip in an 8.8. The desgn was pisspoor when it was called a chevy 10bolt, and didn't get any better just cause they put Ford on it. And this comes from someone that is still running a D44 wussie front end with stock axles, and I won't even use an 8.8 for a paper weight cause it's too light duty, although might make a decent lawn mower axle as long as you don't use anything bigger than a 12hp briggs.

L and L makes good headers. A buddy of mine has had a set for about 7 or 8 years with barely any sign of rust. I had a set of heddmans fo about 4 years and rusted right through them.
