Why doesn't the timing chain fit? Somethings not right here. All timing chains will fit all year small blocks. The only difference is some are double rollers now and the older motors had the eccentric that mounted to the cam gear and the EFI motors don't have thios so the cam gear is a little thicker.

The chain could be thicker because it is a duble roller chain which is stronger and will last longer. As for the chains being the same I looked up an 89 truck with a 351W and an 89 mustang with a 302 and the both had the same part numbers. You can look this info up yourself at http://www1.autozone.com/servlet/UiB...n=viewHomePage

Sounds like you have just purchased a better chain, i wouldent worry to much, put it on and then see if the cover hits it, you will be able to tell while your putting the cover on, but i highly doubt youll have any problems.

Why did you purchase the more expensive timing chains? That Ford Motorsport chain is a good chain however, I would have chose a less expensive chain. I was looking at timing chains at Summit Racing. This is what I found : Comp Cams timing chain CCA-2138 for $39.95 for Ford 84-92 302/351W. Edelbrock timing chain EDL-7811 $59.95 for Ford 62-65, 73-95 221, 260, 289, 302, 351W. Edelbrock timing chain EDL-7814 $59.95 for Ford 62-65, 73-95 221, 260, 289, 302, 351W.
If I were you, I would send the Ford Racing timing chain back and have Summit exchange the part for the Comp Cams timing chain. How many miles did the other chain last? Timing chains are fairly durable, they all wear though. Just my opinion.
