Question two alternators setup??

i recently saw a double alternator setup in a photo and it caught my interest. would this setup be more than just a backup? how would this rig be wired? should it require a double battery setup as well? what would be the advantage other than backup?? alotta questions but it really looked interesting. thanks for all the comment and edification.

I just looked at a diagram with a factory dual alt setup. They just hooked the alternator outputs together so the electrical system thinks it's one big alternator.

I don't know about the back-up theory. If you are not using it, it's still turning, wearing out the bearings and the brushes just like the other one you are using. Unless you had another belt you took off and on.

Ya, I'm kinda curious about why you'd want 2 alternators as well, unless you were running huge amps or something.

Don't ambulances use two alternators? They have a lot of electrical loads with all the lights and I guess all that stuff in the back too.
