A limited slip operates with clutches to keep both wheels going together. A locker has a mechanical conection of sorts. I run a Detroit locker in my Bronco's Dana 60 rear. It is kinda like a ratchet. it will alow a wheel to move faster than the other but won't allow one to move slower than the other. It's kinda brutal on pavement sometimes but works great off road. I don't know if a 8.8 would live with anything tighter than a clutch style limited slip though.

Don't get discouraged. The 8.8 is a pretty good axle, for what it is. Don't lincoln lock it or put a spool in it. As long as you don't throw gobs of HP at it or put anything bigger than a 38 on it you'll be fine.

cutts blew his up with 33's and a worn out 351, another friend of ours blew his up in a 2wd with bald 32's and a 300k mi 300-6 cyl

you call that a tough axle? haha

if you want to upgrade find a sterling 10.25 with vss, it will bolt in, but if you dont have any lift you may have to get teh d-shaft shortened because the pinion sticks out more than the 8.8

but for this guy...i suggest leaving the truck stock, throwing some 33's on it, then getting some sort of locker for the rear...lokrights are cheap

i think everyone knows what i would suggest! its hard to go wrong with one tons! my sterling held up just fine being welded sitting on 39" iroks, powered by a big block 460 which was controlled by one heavyazz foot!

what would YOU suggest (other than the 8.8)?

what i have to wonder about is what does 'wheel the crap out of' mean? and 8.8 wouldn't last a weekend where i wheel

After reading up on the 8.8 rearend it seems that axle swap may be a good idea. whould that be much trouble? what should I look for in a new axle? Would an axle out of an f350 fit with some small mods? also what do you think of improving the exhaust. would that help increase hp? what do you guys think a good upgrade would be for the stock exhaust? sorry for all the questions but I'm pretty green when it comes to offroad mods.

welcome to FTE and welcome to the wonderful obssesion...uhhh, i mean addiction, well actually hobby of offroading!

first you need to be able to distinguish b/t the the different axles. you have your 1/2 ton axles such as the 8.8 and 9" then the 3/4 ton axles such as Dana 60 and Sterling semi-float then you have your big boy 1 tonners that almost always get the job done.... your Dana 70, Corporate 14 bolt, and Sterling 10.25"

you can pretty much swap rear ends around all you want.... every fullsize truck from 1980 to 1996 (maybe 1997) will directly bolt in. i even think the brake lines will swap over to

as for exhaust it is always best to get is as free flowing as possible. thats why stragiht pipes (no cat/muffler) is a popular way to go. i had mine that way for a while and boy would that BB460 scream even at low RPM's, lol. i got older and decided to go with a quiet exhaust. i took a straight through design muffler that came off my 96 F350 powerstroke and welded up my exhaust to run through that muffler. i didn't lose any power b/c it is straight through but it was muffled almost perfectly!
