Transfer case questions

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I have a F250 4x4. How do I tell what T case I have? I want to add oil or possibly change the oil in the T case, any recommendations for this? Oil type & changing it vrs adding more. I don’t remember seeing a drain plug but only a cover plate. (not positive) If the cover plate is how it’s drained will I need a new gasket?

Thanks,

P/T

Shift pattern on T case? Front to back 4L-N-2H-4H. when looking at the cover plate I seen the drain plug. The cover has about 6 bolts.
Thanks,

thats what i was thinking but that is what haynes says. it says that for manual trans and transfercase which i know is wrong for the np-203 it needs something along the lines of 30w with no detergent. ok i did a search and came up with anything from 50W to 90W someone else also had the same info i did.

I don't think you'd want to run 140 up north, that stuff would be like mud in the cold, but I'v always run 90 in my standards and transfercases in New england and never had an issue. On a real cold day the tranny is a bit stiff when you first start it up but it thins out pretty quick. Has anyone been running the synthetics? that is probably the way to go.

I just filled mine last night with 85w140, and it's only about 20 deg. outside. I don't have an owners manual so I used what my Haynes manual said (140 wt). It's not as thick as I thought it would be.

I think I'm using the 85/140 also. It is fairly thick but remember you're not pumping it through oil galleries in an engine. It just sits in the case and gets flung around by the gears in there. You want it to coat well to keep the bearings lubed.

Thanks for all the replies. I’ll change the fluid and do the manual transmission while I'm at it.

Yes you have the NP205 and it uses anywhere from 50w(which is probabally to thin)-85W145. I would personally use 85W90, but that's me.
If you had a NP203 it would be straight 30W.
