Hey all. Been ease-dropping a couple years and got lots of good info on my other Fords. Now I need help with something that's probaly really simple (I hope). I pulled a 360 engine from a 71' F250 (manual trans) and put it into a 74' F100 (auto) that had a 390. Bolted up great and runs great but tranny does not respond at all. I've checked the fluid and it's fine. I don't have my vacuums hooked up yet but don't think that's my problem since it doesn't engage at all. Reverse Neutral or Drive. Could it be the vacuums? Linkage? Oh! The 390 that came out of the 74 was locked up while driving, Could this have trashed the tranny along with the motor.
Yeah, bolted up good. I replaced the converter with a new one because I had to cut the old one off the 390 to get to the fly-wheel bolts. Not sure what you mean by moving freely. I got the pilot out with a puller I borrowed from Auto Zone. I bought the truck from a friend of a friend after it locked. I was told it shifted and drove fine before.
Also, does anyone think the 390 is worth even starting a rebuild although I'm not sure what all's wrong with? There is lots of water in the oil. Cracked head maybe? I know where what I think is a "67" Galaxi 500 for cheap that needs motor and tranny. I have the old manual tranny out of the 71 (3 speed plus a monster of a granny gear).
Opinions Anyone?
for what it's worth, it may take awhile for the tranny fluid to fill up the converter. Keep it in drive for a couple minutes and then see if it eventually grabs. This is what happens to my plow truck when it sits, since it leaks out tranny fluid alot. You'll have to keep rechecking the tranny fluid level. Also, the vacuum is worth hooking up first too.
