Just replaced the steering gear box on my truck and bled the system when sitting on jack stands it steers fine but when on the ground it won't steer at all unless you are moving. it sounds like the power steering pump is not pumping but it was replaced about 2 months ago so i change the gear box and it didn't correct the problem. any ideas?
Its a 74 f100 4x4 with a 78 front end and gear box.
Is the power steering belt tight or is it starting to slip when you go to turn the wheel ? i mean its either the pump or the box but you said you replaced both so now its hard to figure it out, did the pump work well with the other box ? did the other box not work so thats why you changed it ?
The belt is tight and not sliping. Let me start from the begining is started to act like this so i changed the pump did not correct the problem drove the truck for about a month then its been setting for about 7 weeks i then changed the gear box and it did not correct the problem
Scott I had the exact same prob with my 79 4wd. I went through 3 (yes 3) power steering pumps (bought at a leading auto parts chain) before I got a good one. This too was after I replaced the gearbox. If you bought a rebuilt pump, I would suggest buying a brand new non-rebuilt pump from the nearest Ford dealership.
well all replaced the power steering pump again today for the 2nd time and i am going to bleed it in the morning is there any other ways to bleed the system besides turning to the left and then to the right any help would be greatful..
Just for giggles, does your truck have the arm under the drivers side fender well w/four power steering hoses, and the ram assist on the front axle? Probably not, but mine does and that arm leaked all the time. I took it apart to try to seal it and found a gagle of springs, ball checks and various other items of which I didn't know what their purpose was. At any rate, something didn't go back together right and when I started the truck, the front wheels shot to the left. Next try to the right, next try nothing because I got some dirt in it. (I was kinda pissed). Fourth try, I got it. But still had a leak. PS fluid is cheap, to heck with it. Long story short, if you have the same set up, it might have some funk in there fouling you up. Hope that helps or at least you got a laugh.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't need a power steering pump to turn the wheels...this is all done with the steering wheel, shaft, steering gear box and associated linkage in the front-end. Hence, I'd be checking out that new ps gearbox.
