undercoating the bed

I have the bed off my 72 ford truck. I have cleaned all the rust off and there are no holes in the bottom of the bed. What works good to undercoat the bottom of the bed. Should I spend the money to use truck spray in bed liner or will it be a wast of my money. What have you used and how well has it held up.

I think I'm going to use "rubberized undercoating" in an aerosol can, im going to use it on the frame with paint over it and just the undercoating on the underside of bed and cab

Otto is right, 3M makes a rubberized coating that comes in an spray can. It works not only as a protector but a deadner. It's not as tough as say rhino liner, but it will get the job done. I've used it on floor boards, works wonderful. Any parts store should have it.

I'd do something before the undercoating. I'd use some form of rust treatment. I'm using Por15 on mine, but if you have all the rust off and it's completely clean, you can use a good epoxy primer. The cost is about the same, and the Por15 is an excellent choice.

I'd calculate the cost of the rubber undercoating and compare that to the Herculiner. I got my Herculiner for $75 and the undercoating was about $3.99 a can (and a lot easier to apply)

By the way, the Por15 goes on directly over rust, so you just need to wire brush and clean with acetone and it cost about $30/qt.

Por15 goes OVER the rust? What exactly does it do? Does anyone have a link where I can learn more about this?

If you had a compressor you could use a 3M body shutz gun and can of undercoat. Works really well and isn't too expensive. Other wise I have had good results with the rattle cans.
