94 IDI Turbo downpipe?

I am curious as to how much of a power increase the ATS 3" turbo housing and downpipe gives a 7.3 IDI Turbo. Also, is the downpipe an easy install, or do you have to modify the firewall? It looks like the factory one is in there pretty tight. Thanks in advance!

The ats housing and down pipe are worth doing, mainly because Fix Or Repair Daily in their wisdom "choked" the exhaust by going to a 2 1/4 pipe flattned to an inch (at the firewall lip that you will have to mod). Diesels like lots of air in lots of exhaust out. Their are a lot of HP and Torque figures around - believe what you want. With the new exhaust and a modified air in let you can start "turning up" the fuel and adjusting the boost. NOT BEFORE YOU INSTALL YOUR GUAGES pyro boost etc. This will wake the truck up. If you want I can post a brief how to on the install - some are easy some are a pain.

Since mine had a 3" outlet and downpipe I can not tell you the cost.
But I can tell you that it is a lot less than the chips the Power Stroke guys are buying to get similar power increases.

I installed a 2" body lift on my cab and had all kinds of room for the downpipe.
In fact I have so much room around the 3" pipe I am thinking about going bigger.

If you have a fax, pm me and I will fax the ATS instructions. Before you attempt be aware that you may have to take the turbo off, get a good manual. The down pipe housing is held on by 5/16 -- 12 point bolts. If you can not get these off with out rounding then the turbo has to come off. Out of 4 that I have done I had only one that I did not have to take the turbo off. One I had to cut the inlet pipe off the turbo because the "T" joint would not come apart. If you have a reasonable ability it is not a bad job. When you get the parts check the fit between the out let housing and the down pipe, should be a tap fit, if not go to your local muffler shop an ask them to expand. Can give you more detailed destructions if you want. Do not forget your guages.

thanks for the reply i will send you a fax number tomorrow and you can send the instructions at your convenience. i do not have a turbo on my truck now. i just bought a used ATS and will start trying to install it, when it gets here. the exhaust pipes are missing, so i will have to get some made or buy some from ATS. everything else looks complete, and the seller says it is all there. guages are not included, but i will buy some and install them at the same time. i have a mechanic friend who will help me through this. he has some experience with turbo's.

I, too, have the '94 IDI turbo and know others who have done the ATS mod. They report much quicker boost and turbo spool up. You'll get lower EGTs and quicker acceleration. I may just do the 3" downpipe and a 4" inch straight pipe exhaust. The ATS mod will run at least $500 the last I checked. The other mod to consider is scrapping the ATS air box and fit some sort of open element filter such as Tymar Performance's PSD set up. We do need to move our fuel filters to do so.

i will install the ATS with the 3 inch down pipe and guages. that is all i think this stock engine will stand. i hope to get rid of the smoke at high altitudes. at 7200 feet above sea level, this thing really pours out black smoke. a bit more acceleration and power for pulling a trailer would be nice too. i try to hold my rpm to 2200 and with a 5 speed and a 373 rear ratio, i'm at 70 miles per hour. that good enough for me.
