Earlier I posted that I was having troubles getting my 2000 PSD diesel started when it is cold. Based on input from this site, I replaced the GPR and went to 5W-40 synthetic. It was 18 this weekend and she fired off after one cycle. Before it would have been a struggle if I even got it started. I do see lots of white smoke. Is this normal?

Thanks for the assistance.

How much white smoke? That's indicating unburnt fuel still ...u could have some bad glow plugs. Have u checked the resistance of the GP's?
Also, A good set of quality batteries will continue to provide lots of juice to the glow plugs even after started. If they're week it can cause problems. Good batteries are CRUCIAL to a diesel starting in cold weather. I can't emphasize that enough.
Let me know.

I would add also that some smoke on a real cold morning like that is nothing to worry about, but huge clouds that you can't see through is too much.
To me, it is a lot of smoke. I am not real mechanically inclined so I am not sure how to check the GP resistance. Is this simple to a point where a mechanically challenged person could do? What is the easiest way to verify the batteries and it good working condition?

A multimeter(DVM = digital voltmeter) can help a lot. Sears carrys one for about $25 and is a must have item in the toolbox. U can check battery voltage, charging voltage and run resistance checks(ohmmeter). Let me know if u can take that option...u can also have your batterries load tested at an auto shop.Resistance checking the gp's is fairly simple.

my truck blows white smoke when its cold for about 2-3 minutes until the cylinders get warmed up. Every diesel I have ever seem always blows white smoke when they are cold. Heck my 4430 John Deere blows white smoke for like 10 minutes when its cold, haha. Seriously, how long should one see smoke coming out of the pipes on these trucks say at 20 degrees? I know clouds of smoke are bad, but what about just normal white smoke?

on a very cold start (around here 10* is frigid), i can expect to see a puff of gray (mix between white and black) smoke at startup and blue smoke for about 5 seconds. then it clears up. i just have a good operating glow plug system. cycle once and fire away.
wow, mine smokes for 2-3 minutes. All the gp's are working the gpr is working, wonder what is different in mine to cause that.
How clean are all your electrical connections at the GPR and batteries.
Should be NO corrosion at all especially on the high current connections. Weak
batteries can add to the white smoke problem by being unable to deliver a good dose of juice to the GP's.
