I am looking for a new OBD II tester, I currently have a code reader, which I purchased about 4 years ago for $400.00. I am looking for real time information from the sensors not just when they fail.
I have a Ford diesel, Chevy suburban and my Father has a Dodge so I need something to look at all of them.
You may be looking at spending a lot more than you think. USED scanners with software to 01 - 02 START around $500. If you have newer than 02 vehicles you may run into problems finding software. Greg
If you could pick up a used Genisys on ebay that would cover all your vehicles, give you real time data and bidirectional control and testing of sensors and actuators. It's genisysotc.com This is a professional tool. Another real good one for powertrain is EASE Diagnostics which is pc based see it at obd2.com Whatever scanner you get you want it to be CAN compliant or upgradable. CAN is the next generation that is replacing OBD2. It's going to be mandated for all vehicles in 2008. If you get a CAN compliant scanner it will not become obsolete. Some vehicles are already CAN compliant now.
The Autoxray ezscan 6000 will do all that you want. Should be about $500. I have the ezscan 4000 and I purchased the enhanced ford upgrade for $49.00. Midway auto parts has the 4000 on sale for $219.00. You can get GM,Ford,Chrysler,Toyota enhanced upgrades from the web site. You can also call to purchase. All the upgades together cost $119. Good company.

I agree with Monty's recommendation for the Actron 9175 for your budget. It is a scanner giving real time data as well as a code reader and works with most any brand car.
If you want to step up to something for your laptop, look at EASE diagnostics at www.obd2.com
I have the AutoEnginuity device that interfaces with the truck at the OBD II port and my laptop via the USB port. I can monitor most of my sensors in real time and data log multiple sensors as well. It is really easy to create a graph in Excell as well. ITPDiesel sells them. Talk to Dennis. Get the enhanced Ford package.
Here is an example of me monitoring my High Pressure Oil Pump pressure or ICP (injection control pressure) vs RPM and also the IPR (injector pressure regulator duty cycle and mass fuel demanded. On gas engines you can watch the oxygen sensors output in real time. It really makes working on your truck easier, more fun, and more productive.
