i was feeling fairly good this morning, so i decided to try "playing" out in the garage. i have had this idea for a while now of making something to make it easier to put the snow plow on the truck by myself.
i had some 6 inch caster wheels given to me last year, and decided they would be the basis for the build. i took a piece of 1 inch black pipe and cut it in half for 2- 6 inch sections, and welded the pipe to the fixed casters, then drilled the top of the pipe, and inserted a 5/16 bolt, with a wing nut to keep it in place. these went into the ski pockets at the blade to hold the front up. then off to wall mart, to get a cheap trailer jack stand. back in the garage, i cut the jack stand down to 4 inches, and welded the bottom to a 6 inch swivel caster. i then make a plate with 3 -5/16x1 studs in it, and welded that to the outer tube. that did not work as planned, so off to napa and got 2 5/16 by 1 1/2 bolts and wing nuts. back home, i made another plate and welded it a little higher to the outer tube, and now it fits into the holes drilled in the back frame, and the wing nuts keep it in place. i now have 2 1/4 inch of up-down adjustment at the hookup pins. total out of pocket expense was $22.45, and i can roll a 700 lb plow around now with 1 finger push.
it is a Meyers C-8. it weighs somewhere in the 700 lb range.
this was a thought that had been going on for a while. it takes 2 people to put it on, and when you need to move it, you have to get the truck. now i just give it a little push. it rolls very easy, and as easy uphill as it does down hill. the only thing i think i am going to do different with the next setup is to use locking wheel casters. this way i can put a locker on each plow so it does not roll away on its own. i have 4 plows, 2 on trucks and 2 as backups incase something breaks.
total cost if i had to buy everything is somewhere around $85. if I were to buy a plow dolly, they cost between $195 and $250. so rite off the bat, i save at least $100, and gain something to do for 2-3 hours.
I think you have the same blade as me, looking at the 4 springs on the back of it. I can put mine on by myself, just by inserting the chain into the opening and raising the plow unil the holes line up (or close to it) and then inserting the pins and readjusting the chain. But, like you said, if you want to move it, you have to hook it back up to move it, unless you happen to have 6 big burly friends over....
actually, i use western plow pods, and they sit on the floor of the garage rite inside the door. when i take the wheels off, i will put them inside, and the pods on. i only get on average 20 hours out of a set of Meyers skis, but the western pods, with a piece of 1 inch black pipe as a bushing have lasted 8 years now, and are less than half worn. the pods spin. the skis just stay in one place and wear the front off till you hit the shanks
