BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Textile manufacturer Russell Corp. will eliminate 2,300 jobs -- about 15 percent of its worldwide work force -- and freeze its pension plan.

The job cuts, most of which will come in the U.S., are part of a bid by Russell to reduce costs so it can continue selling men's fleece products to Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Russell spokeswoman Nancy Young said Friday.

Russell also plans to close a sewing plant that employs about 600 people in Jimenez, Mexico, and said it would move production of Huffy Sports backboards from Sussex, Wisc., to China, eliminating 85 U.S. jobs.

After the cuts, Russell will have 2,000 workers in Alexander City, where it once employed 7,000 people.

Wow....... sounds like price market to me.
Companys looking were to cut price to keep up with WallyWorld.
I rember when outers told us they were going to sell at Walmart,I though great !
We can make lots of parts,Walmarts are everywere.
I Didnt know It would be china getting the jobs.

Maybe people consume more because of wal-mart. They buy a $150 lawn mower at Walmart every three years instead of a $500 good quality mower somewhere else that will last 20 years. People consume more because of walmart having such a big selection of impulse items. Without all the impulse items you'd consume less and over time have a lot more money. Just thoughts.

Moses and Noah lived 900 years without Walmart, magazines, candy bars, novelty key chains, football team license plates, packaged salad and lava lamps. Consume less.

I've learned this. The older I get the less stuff I want. The more you have, the more you have to fix, dust, insure, organize, pickup, maintain, replace and worry about. These days I love to just throw stuff away or sell it on ebay. If I haven't used it in six months I don't need it.

The ads about helping the American worker are long gone but WongMart must be aware of the negitive attitude a lot of consumers have toward them because of their made in China products. They started advertising "locally grown" produce here in the Phoenix area. Who are they kidding? If it was possible, they would buy that from China also..

Agreed. Don't be too suprized when you find that the more expensive mower (cheaper over the long term) is made in USA and sold in places more enjoyable to be in than Walmart. Part of the additional cost of the $500 mower will help build a bridge, or fill a pot hole, in your hometown.

Too many Americans that I know tend toward short term thinking. I see it in corporations, govt agencies, and individuals. It seems to lead to a lot of wrong thinking. Regrettable are the actions that follow wrong thinking. People from elsewhere likely have similar problems I'm somewhat more OK with that.

Yes most rational people think at the margin. They make marginal choices when it comes to buying something. But this is kinda how our society has become. The real problem with Wal Mart is this. They have many suppliers to choose from. Wal Mart is really the only store of its kind that these suppliers sell through. Therefore if the suppliers do not meet wal marts needs its easy for WM to find some other willing one. But then it again it brings up another question can a store such as walmart be an INELASTIC good/service? What do yall think about that concept?

I cam back from two weeks on the road and am AMAZED this thread is still going, sheesh, i gave up trying to read up on all the new posts... but here is a response for all of it and i for one am dropping this!!

Blame who you want, defend who you want, but i don't want to here it in 20 years when this country is in shambles! every move to save money now is coming back to haunt! every frozen pension or lost retirement or lost health care is coming out of our pockets through taxes so government can support retirees and poor. every job lost is gone for good so less people are paying taxes, whats that mean for the rest of us? higher burden, strangling tax rate on middle class, no funding for infrastructure. add all this to ever increasing apparant corruption in government and our children are building homes by stacking rocks and wiping with their hand while their election only has one name on ballot. wallys kids will be long since moved to their private islands and laughing while they count YOUR money. i love history and watch the world to see what is becoming history, and am afraid our descendants will look back on us as short sighted, greedy, cheap, idiots who ruined their lives to save .12 on a screwdriver!!!

hopefully this doesn't come across as political, just getting irritated that though we all are guilty of entering one of these stores or not checking labels as much as we should, some actually DEFEND what is happening to our country or transferring blame elsewhere. i bought american when i could find it, but my freedom of choice has been revoked MOSTLY by this stores practices and the powers that be let them get away with it over and over, burying the news under an arguement over whether or not howard stern should be censored even though he is on a pay service LMAO. thats the camo of the day for all the stuff they don't want you to get stirred up about.

time to wake up america, and canada better pay attention, that big border makes our problems intertwine quite easily
