Remember those people who had the American Dream by owning their own buisness lost out to Wal-Mart.
Again accountability rears its head. Being beat out by another business is part of life, it happens on many levels. The small business that can bring something to the table like good service and a decent price (not necessarily a better price) will survive. On a larger scale then small shops, TSC (Tractor Supply Company) intentionally builds stores near Wal-Marts because they have found an increase in sales by doing so. The strategy is that they will attract a percentage of customers simply because those customers don't like Wal-Mart. TSC has done well with this being part of its strategy.
Quite Simply Wal-Mart has horrible service. There are many good small businesses that understand this and adapt when Wal-Mart moves in. I see more borderline businesses fail when Wal-Mart moves into a community then good ones.
The Labor Department has been rebuked by their own inspector general. The rebuke involves an agreement the department struck with Wal-Mart after violations of child labor law.
The Wage & Hour Division of the Labor Department had found that Wal-Mart committed 85 child labor violations allowing employees under 18 to operate dangerous machinery like chain saws and balers for cardboard boxes. Unfortunately, the Labor Department allowed Wal-Mart's lawyers to write substantial amounts of the settlement, while leaving their own attorneys out of the loop. The settlement reached says that any future inspections by the labor department will occur only after a 15-day notice. Wal-Mart will also have 10 days to come into compliance after an inspection and avoid any citations or fines.
The inspector general reports that "the Wal-Mart agreement may adversely impact W.H.D.'s (Wage & Hour Divsion's) authority to conduct future investigations and issue citations or penalty assessments, and potentially restrict information to the public. This is how the LABOR Department protects workers?
now this came from my local union monthly publication "current lines". so i'm sure someone will argue the validity of this, if you have proof, let me see it.
wally world continues to harm the american worker, not long ago there was the illegal immigrant workers in their stores. that disappeared from the news QUICK!!!! before that a butchers union organized the meat department in ONE WALMART..... notice NONE of their stores have meat dept. now, all prepackaged meats. any attempt lately to improve the conditions of workers in walmart stores is being thwarted and buried as quickly as possible to keep that profit margin up for the board and the stockholders.
and k-mart is cheaper on some items, target on many as well. you can get things at sears, kohls, jc penneys etc. etc. for same price on a few items. and almost all have better quality brands for sale at their stores......but you don't hear about these same offenses from these other stores.....maybe that money made on cheaper products and misuse of minors, illegal immigrants, and side stepping union-busting laws is being used to keep on telling you that they are cheaper when they're not really.
and another problem i have is the employees in the commercials smiling and laughing at work, the only smiley face i see in those stores when i HAVE to go in one is the little yellow ones on the price signs.
P.S. YES I CALLED WAL-MART AN EVIL EMPIRE IN A PREVIOUS THREAD AND I AM NOT TAKING IT BACK, IF THIS COMMENT STARTED A THREAD FOR PEOPLE TO EXCHANGE OPINIONS AND INFORMATION.........GREAT!!!! THATS WHAT PEOPLE SHOULD DO, AND I THINK THIS WOULD BE A MUCH BETTER WORLD IF WE COULD ALL DISCUSS THINGS IN LIFE OPENLY AND HONESTLY. caps lock was on and i don't feel like retyping that part lol. glad to see we can go two pages on something non FORD without fighting. I like to give out info when i can, hope most of it is accurate, and do with it what you think is best for you.
not trying to start anything or come back at anyone, just my 2 cents.

Wal-mart dose have benifits for it's full time workers and just like everyother major retailer they pay a wage that is relative to what work is being performed. I'm guessing by your disgust that you boycott all major retailers like k-mart, target, menards, home depot and Lowes? They all do the same thing. Are we supposed to stop going to all chain stores that have lots of part-time work and only care about making money? Man that would seriously change things in a persons life. Even local grocers are loaded with part-time workers with no bennifits and I'm sure they are in it for the money too. Where would I get my food from with this hate and boycott big business plan?<!-- / message --><!-- no sigs except when logged in --><!-- sig -->
Simple fact we are talking about Walmart here and they are the largest retailer in minnesota with people on minnesota care a health care the taxpayers pay for.Not Target not Menards not home depot.
I never said boycott,I understand why some people shop there.
Just dont like how they do biz.
I think they keep working poor working part time and poor.
Thats what happens in this state I cant say thats everywere.
Well OSin86 you'll be pleased perhaps to hear that Walmart is building a distribution center, I beleive their 2nd here in Wisconsin. Apparently folks like you that thrive on supporting Walmart have created such a demand for their (goods?) that Beaver Dam, Wisconsin has somewhat been forced by the powers of the God of SuperCenters to build, to Walmarts liking, a distribution center. None of the contractors are local, only suppliers. The jobsite was shut down for a period of time after some problems with inmates from Fox Lake Correctional Institute. Apparently the city of Beaver Dam didn't like convicts at large working at that jobsite. Once officals where in there investigating, they stumbled upon some employees from one of the "out of town" contractors that where illegal aliens. Seems WalMart has it's own set of contractors that travel throughout the country building new WallyWhatevers and in order to keep within Walmart's ideal America need "CHEAP" labors to meet costs. Hmmmmm, can't afford to pay a fair wage, even to hard working labors. Unfortunately my little community has survived by commutting to other communities if they desired to shop at WalMart. About a year ago the local paper broke news of the city government having talks with a group from WalMart. Well before anyone realized, bingo, plans where done, more good farm land gone and guess who's coming to town! Behind the backs of taxpayers the city goverment worked some kind of deal to bring WallyWorld here. There was a major calling out of our elected officals and their tactics. Major opposition of even allowing WalMart into the city. But it all fell on deaf ears. Seems the voting public will have something to say at the next election, but keeping what most of us,(only my opinion) don't want won't happen. We have a Big K and that is it for big box stores. They, though struggling, have been good for the community though I shop there rarely. The local TV/electronics/camera store just closed out it's TV department, know why? Yup can't compete. He is very big in photography and hopes to cling on to what he has once WalMart is built but as of Friday he was very discouraged. This is only in my little world here in Wisconsin. I can sight what is happening in little Chicago as I call it also. Little Chicago, also known as Door County, has a WalMart. WalMart wants to build a superdooper store but has been met with strong opposition. I was born and raised there, and if it wasn't for the tourists spending money in all those little mom & pop shops scattered from one end of the pennisula to the other there would not be much income for 100's of people. I feel sorry for them as there isn't anyway for them to try and compete, let alone survive. It's a shame the way greed affects us..........WalMart as well as the American public. I was brought up in a house where we had what we could afford and worked for what we wanted. I never once thought that someday I could walk into a store and buy underwear, oil, and beer. It's an American dream, too bad it's ruined so many others.
It maybe be cheap to buy things at walmart but you will pay in other ways !
In the last fiscal year, the state government spent $270.2 million for MinnesotaCare, a program that provides assistance for people who don't have access to affordable insurance. Yet no one in the state government knows which employers have the most workers enrolled in the program.
"If it's true what people say, that big multinational companies are outsourcing health care to taxpayers, then it would be good to have a handle on which ones," said Rep. Sheldon Johnson, DFL-St. Paul. "It's just information."
But it's information that Wal-Mart fears, and for good reason. In other states that have compiled such lists, Wal-Mart has come at or near the top among employers with workers enrolled in state medical assistance. Once such findings are made public, they can be used by opponents of Wal-Mart to stir up support for punitive measures against big-box retailers.

Walmart is bad,low wages,no benifits.
That's why I avoid WM, plus I don't like playing bumper cars with shopping carts!
I'm really surprised with all the negitive opinions about WongMart. (I think they should incorporate a Chinese name). I thought I was just a pig-headed old fort that was behind the times. I got to thinking about my comment that I still shop there but buy only USA products and am thinking maybe I should cut that out also. I only buy these products. I buy 250 to 300# of wild bird seed every 10 days to two weeks that is of a better quality and bagged here in Phoenix. I buy their "brand" cereal that we feed to our parrots and Motorcraft filters for my diesel about once a year. I get their "wannabe butter " that the wife likes. That's it. Other than the bird seed I don't think I add to their overall profit. I have tried to buy the seed at other outlets because of WongMarts greed but it contains too much cheap crushed corn and other ingredients that the wild critters don't eat...... Another thought. If the majority feel this way, why are the stores so busy ?? Are scruples so rare??.... ..
This debate could go on forever. It boils down to what people in general want and Walmart provides it. People in general do not purchase for longevity, they just want their purchase to last long enough to get by for the time being. Bottom line is: It is that stuff in peoples wallets, either the lack of it, or the desire to keep what they have in it, that determines where they shop. Brand and domestic product loyalty is fading fast, because of this mindset. jmo

We've got a super walmart here in KC (it was called a Hyper-Mart when it opened), one of the first in the country. It's now one of the worst, but that's sort of a chicken/egg thing. They have real skudzy customers, which means they can only get low-rent employees, so they then can attract only low-life customers (heck - I even shop there).
I saw a guy changing his oil in the parking lot, just letting the old stuff run out on the ground. I saw a package of t-bone steaks stuck in the back of boys' underwear (clothing department - not a Michael Jackson thing). They have somewhere between 8342 and 5 kajillion checkouts (they cover 2 time zones) but never more than 7 cashiers at any one time. Even though that's literally a ton of people (do the math), it's still only 14 pudgy hands to push the buttons and call for price checks and check approvals, while smacking gum and talking with each other about when their next break is, and what they're goint to do to Anthony if he ever shows up.
On China, I think they have a plan to take over America, starting with all the landfills.
Everything made over Sea's. China, Korea, etc. Unions driving up the cost of American made items. Wal-Mart screwing the public. The list goes on and on.
Think about this. My 93 F150 I just sold. Half the bolts on it were Metric. The Trans was made by Mazda. Hmmmm, American made, or American Assembled.
My wife has worked for Maverik Country Stores for 18 years, no benefits, and after the 18 years and them screwing with her retirement, she has a Whopping $800. The old man that owned the Company died, and the Sons took it over. My Sister-inlaw Lost 17 thousand in Stock because the Sons felt they were over paying the stock price for employee's. They cut their wages, and asked them to put in over time and pay them straight wages. This is long before Wal-Mart ever come here.
There is one in every crowd, and a sucker is born every minute. No matter how you try, you will never satisfy the mases.
Complain all you want, but Wally World has helped our commnunity. It has created jobs that were not there, low pay, part time, full time, what ever. Before our kids had to leave town to find work. We can afford to buy something now. As for the Mon/Pop stores, the only ones that could afford to shop there were the Mom/Pop, they were the only ones to get a discount. Maybe you make a fortune, but I don't.
why are the stores so busy ?? Are scruples so rare??....
The stores are so busy because they provide products that people buy at prices people are willing to pay. There is nothing mysterious or unscrupulous about it and the business practices Walmart uses are not illegal or uncommon. Any one that wants to shop elsewhere, for whatever reason, is free to do so.
Interesting item from this morning's paper: Wal-Mart was top chartiable donor in Arkansas in '04. Donations from the Wal-Mart Foundation -$120 million- and the Walton Family Foundation totaled $221 million.

Case in point
I sell wood flooring for a living, we basically have a few different levels of flooring...
We get some containers of prefinished flooring from a company in china. The wood comes from the us, is shipped to china , milled, shipped to Germany, Prefinisged, then shipped to America. Its VERY cheap, and only random length 1-5ft
We get unfinished Domestic product from Flooring mills from WI, and MS. a little bit more expensive random length 1-7ft
We mill our own product, we start with a better grade of wood, and our lengths are longer our stuff is most expensive..but has the best quality... random length 1-10ft or longer.
I just sold 2000sf to a guy building a brand new 400k dollar house, yep, he went the prefinished route.
Occasionally people want our product, but lots of times the chinese stuff gets sold, even after explaining the differences in quality, lots of people only look at the bottom dollar, not the value of that dollar.
Why do we sell the chineese stuff? we need product lines to sell to everyone to stay afloat. A missed sale is missed income
