Properly installed sfety chains and maintaining a reasonable speed (that's why the speed for towing is lower) I have seen couplers of various types fail and had to repair both mine and other peoples equipment on the road. I spent some time verifing what I needed to be legal and I have over done the chains and hooks on my trailer. I had someone mess with my hitch once and didn't regret the slight damage to the back bumper and I never lost control, it did jerk around a lot but that was it. The only people I've ever seen that lost control were people who were speeding. An unhitched trailer with no brakes on the freeway is an unguided missle wether rolling or stopped.

In juvinile court years ago, I told a judge, I thought the place they put a stop sign was stupid. He told me, you think gremlins just come out at night and put up signs? He informed me most laws and signs are done because studies showed they are needed for safty and order.
He then gave me a rather larger fine and the choice to relearn drivers school or revoke my licence until 18 yrs of age.
