I have upgraded to a 32' Cargo Mate tri axel enclosed trailer. I estimate loaded it will be 10k. I was pulling the hitch off my old 89 dually when a welder friend stoped by and said , hey I just pulled one out of a psd F-350 you can have. Great this saves me a ton of work. My question is while changing tires on my 94 dually I noticed about a 4'' chanel welded under the bed from side to side with a welded nut in the center. So my truck had a homemade hitch installed already. But because of the bed liner I did not notice. This hitch is nothing like the others which look factory. Should I trust this hitch pulling that much weight?
Sounds kind of homemade. I guess it depends on how much you trust someone elses home welding. Take it to a metal shop and point it out to the guy and ask how solid it is.
I guess it depends on the other hitch, and the integrity of the current hitch. Me personally, I wouldn't trust a welded on nut. I have a B&W turnover ball which I like a lot, I don't tow that often to the ball is flipped down most of the time and my bed mat hides everything. I would probably go with the used one out of the F350.
I've done the welded-nut and the aftermarkets. Aftermarkets look prettier, but the one's I've had are sloppy and get "tweaked". The home-mades can do that too, it all depends on the welder's ability and the quality and thickness of steel they are using. Our '03 KR has the nut welded to the bottom of a 1" thick x 8" wide piece of steel that is welded and bolted to both frame rails. It is solid. I'm changing my '99's flip-down in the next month because it is so tweaked and wobbly that I don't trust it anymore. If I can, I'll go to a BW-flip like was mentioned before...after I fill the giant 10x12 hole in floor of my bed from the flip-down ball.
I have to agree on the flip-down hitches. I have had them get loose and start to wobble also. I am very impressed with the B&W turnover ball that I have in my truck. I pull heavy with it a lot and it doesn't wobble a bit.
My older dually looks like it had the flip down but it is welded up solid now. It was kinda of a pain because it was always in the way. I will be pulling out the bed liner to see what I have .My welder friend said that if it is just the channel welded across then the load is not spread out and the frame will take more of a beating. So I will probable have it beefed up a bit
